YT Quick Summary — AI Video Summaries An extension that uses Google's Gemini AI to summarize the content of Youtube videos. Summarize any public YouTube video with Gemini AI. Bring your own free API key. No account, no tracking, no data collected. Stop watching a 40-minute video to find out whether it's worth 40 minutes. YT Quick Summary reads any public YouTube video with Google's Gemini AI and gives you a TL;DR plus 4–8 concrete key points — usually faster than you could skim the comments. It runs entirely in your browser using your own free Gemini API key. There is no server, no account, no sign-up, and no data collection of any kind. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ TWO WAYS TO SUMMARIZE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▸ FROM THE TOOLBAR Open a video, click the extension icon, hit Summarize. Works on regular videos, Shorts, and youtu.be links. ▸ WITHOUT OPENING THE VIDEO Click the ⋮ (three-dot) menu on any thumbnail — home page, search results, the sidebar, the watch page — and choose "Summarize". A clean panel opens over the page. Not "anonymized" data, not "aggregate" analytics. Nothing. • No account, no login, no backend server — there is nowhere for your data to go • No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking, no ads • Your API key is stored locally in your browser and sent only to Google's Gemini API, in a request header — never in a URL, never to the developer • Your summaries are stored locally and never uploaded • Zero third-party requests. The extension makes exactly one kind of outbound call: to Google's Gemini API. It doesn't even load video thumbnails, which is why the history list is text-only by design • Fully open source — read every line before you install it The permission to access youtube.com exists for one reason: to add the "Summarize" row to YouTube's ⋮ menu and to draw the summary panel. The YouTube page never sees your API key — the key is held by the extension's background worker, in a separate context the page cannot reach. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SETUP (2 MINUTES, ONE TIME) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 1. Go to aistudio.google.com/apikey and sign in with a Google account 2. Click "Create API key" and copy it 3. Click the YT Quick Summary icon, open settings, paste the key, click Save That's it. Google's free tier is enough for normal personal use. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHY BRING YOUR OWN KEY? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Because the alternative is worse. A summarizer with a built-in key needs a server to hide that key behind, and a server that sees every video you summarize. That server costs money, which means a subscription, an ad, or your data as the product. BYOK removes all of it. You talk to Google directly, you see exactly what your usage costs, and there is no middleman — including the developer. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ GOOD TO KNOW ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ • Public videos only. Private, unlisted, age-restricted, region-blocked and members-only videos can't be read by Gemini — that's a limit on Google's side, not something an extension can work around • Google's free tier caps YouTube video input at 8 hours of video per day. Ordinary use won't come close • Long videos take longer. Gemini processes the whole thing; the request gives up after 3 minutes • Summarizing from the ⋮ menu keeps running while you browse. Summarizing from the toolbar popup does not — Chrome closes popups when they lose focus, which cancels the request.
