YouTube Preview Volume — Sound On or Off for Hover Videos
Overview
Mute hover clips or give them sound at a level of their own. The main YouTube player keeps its volume.
Point at a thumbnail and a short clip starts to run. In some accounts it stays silent; in others it suddenly speaks up as loud as the video you watched last. YouTube Preview Volume gives these hover videos a setting of their own: a speaker control on the clip itself and a level that is independent of the main player. Turn it on, turn it off, set how loud, and the watch page keeps the volume you chose there. 🎚 WHAT YOU GET • A speaker in the top-right corner of the thumbnail video, where the site puts its own, styled like its other controls. Where the site already shows one of its own (on ad previews, for example), ours takes its place; the captions button stays. • One click switches it on or off, and the choice is remembered for every next clip until you change it, much like muting in a social feed. • A slider that opens when you rest the pointer on the speaker. Turn the mouse wheel over it to move the level in 5% steps. • A toolbar popup with a knob from 0 to 100% (drag it, scroll over it or use the arrow keys) and the same on/off switch. • The power switch in the popup turns the extension off, and everything behaves exactly as before. 🖱 HOW IT WORKS 1. Hover over a thumbnail on the home feed or in search results until the clip begins. 2. Click the speaker to hear it; click again to silence it. If you only want to mute YouTube previews for good, leave it off and nothing else changes. 3. Rest the pointer on it to open the slider and set how loud it gets. 4. Prefer the site's native control? A switch in the popup hides ours, and the extension remembers what you choose on the native one. Out of the box the level is 30% and the speaker is off, so nothing is heard until you ask for it. 💡 GOOD TO KNOW Why does a thumbnail start talking by itself? In some accounts the site gives hover preview sound the main player's volume. With this extension the choice you make on the speaker is kept, and the level is separate. Why is there no sound right after opening a tab? The browser may hold audio back until you click on the page once. One click on our control turns it on. Why does nothing happen on my feed? The site's own "Video previews" option (Settings, then Playback and performance) must be switched on. With it off nothing runs, and the extension has nothing to adjust. 🔒 PRIVACY Free, with no account and no data collected. Nothing is sent anywhere. Your settings are stored only in the browser's local extension storage on your device. The only permission is "storage", and the extension runs only on youtube.com. After installation it opens a short welcome page once; on removal it shows a short optional survey page.
