YouTube Auto-Generated CC
Overview
Auto-enables YouTube's auto-generated captions with configurable per-locale rules. Free, no tracking.
Watch any YouTube video with the captions you actually want, automatically. YouTube's auto-generated captions are useful — but the extension only shows the caption dropdown after you click a menu, and you have to pick the right track every time. This extension does it for you on every video, based on rules you set once. How it works Two dropdowns in a small popup. That's the whole settings surface. • For videos in my local language — for videos spoken in a language you understand, do this: show captions in that language (default), use the video's original language, or don't show captions at all. • For all other videos — for videos in any other language, do this: translate to English (or any of ~130 languages), keep the original language, or don't show captions. Your local language is auto-detected from your browser on first install, and you can change it any time. Examples • A Romanian speaker: local = Romanian → show native Romanian captions; other → translate to English. Watching a French vlog gets English captions automatically; watching a Romanian podcast gets Romanian. • An English speaker learning Spanish: local = English → show English; other → use original. English videos get English captions, Spanish videos get Spanish (great for language learning). • Someone who hates captions on their native tongue: local = No captions; other = translate to English. Native-language videos stay clean, foreign videos get translated. Privacy • No data collection. No analytics. No telemetry. • No network requests of any kind — the extension has no servers. • Your three settings are stored in Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync, which optionally syncs across your own Chrome devices if you have Chrome Sync on. The extension never reads or transmits anything else. • Open source: the entire code is a few hundred lines you can audit yourself. Availability The extension itself works everywhere YouTube does. The popup UI is translated into ~130 languages using Chrome's built-in localization; falls back to English if your UI language isn't included.
