YouTongue — Hear Any Word, Know What It Means
1 rating
)Overview
Select an English word on any page: hear it in real YouTube clips, and AI tells you what it means in your sentence.
Hear every word. Know what it means in context. Met a word you've only ever read? Select it on any page and YouTongue plays real moments from YouTube where people say it — speeches, interviews, talks, news — right where you are reading. Not a text-to-speech voice: real accents, real tempo, real intonation. Then AI reads the sentence you found it in and tells you what the word means there — not just the first entry in a dictionary. HOW IT WORKS • Select a word or a phrase (up to 100 characters) on any web page — an article, a document, an email you are writing. • Right-click → "Hear “…” on YouTongue", or press Alt+Shift+Y (Option+Shift+Y on Mac). Or turn on the "Hear" button right at your selection. • A small card opens next to the text with clips cued to the moment it is said. Select another word — the card switches without reloading. • Pick an accent — American, British, Australian or New Zealand — right in the card. Your choice is remembered. • Close it with Esc, the × button, or a click anywhere else. KNOW WHAT IT MEANS — IN CONTEXT (NEW) • Signed in, the card shows what the word means in the sentence you selected it from: the meaning it has there, its part of speech and CEFR level (A1–C2), with your sentence and the word marked in it. • The same word gets a different meaning in a different sentence — a river bank is not the bank that lends you money. • Phrasal verbs and idioms are explained as a whole. • In a video's subtitles, tap a word and see what it means in that line. • A free account gets 5 meanings a day; Pro explains every word you open. • Meanings are written by AI and can be wrong — "Not this meaning?" tells us. LEARN FROM WHAT YOU WATCH • Play a video with English subtitles — on Netflix, YouTube and other sites. The YouTongue icon shows EN; click it and every line of the video opens in a side panel next to it. • The line being said is highlighted and stays in view. Click a time to jump back, or search the whole episode for a word. • Tap any word, or a phrase, in the transcript: the video pauses, you hear it said by real people in YouTube clips and see what it means in that line. Replay the line, save the word to a folder, then play on. • The Hear button and the subtitles panel are off until you turn them on — one click on the welcome page or in the toolbar popup. KEEP THE WORDS YOU MEET • Signed in, save words to folders and add a note to a word — a translation or how it sounds — and see it wherever you meet the word again. • Your library keeps each word with the sentence it came from and what it meant there — the same library as on youtongue.me. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Out of the box the extension does nothing until you ask it to, and then only on the current tab. The Hear button and the subtitles panel need Chrome's permission to run on the pages you open — asked once, when you turn them on. • Subtitles are read inside your browser; the subtitle track itself is never uploaded. • Signed out, only the word you look up is sent to youtongue.me to search for clips. • Signing in is optional. It keeps a history and folders of your words: then the page address, title and the sentence around the word go to your library. Delete any of it, or the whole account, at any time. • Signed in, the word you look up and the sentence around it — on a page, in a document you're editing or in a box you're typing in, never in a password field — or the subtitle line you tapped, with the lines around it, go to youtongue.me, which asks an AI model what the word means there. For the meaning, youtongue.me keeps only a fingerprint of the sentence, linked to no account; your library keeps the sentence itself, as above. • No tracking and no ads in the extension. Clips are played with the official YouTube player.
