Overview

Add furigana (hiragana, katakana, or romaji readings) above kanji on any page. One click per site. 100% offline.

Read any Japanese website, even if you don't know every kanji yet. Yomikata adds furigana (small reading hints) above kanji on the pages you choose. Click the toolbar button once and the whole page becomes readable — including comments, menus, and content that loads as you scroll. WHY LEARNERS PICK YOMIKATA ✅ One click per site — Yomikata remembers which sites you turned it on for, and syncs that list across your Chrome profiles. Turn it on for NHK News or your favorite blog once; it just works from then on. ✅ Three reading styles — show readings as hiragana (ひらがな), katakana (カタカナ), or romaji. Beginners can start with romaji and graduate to kana without switching extensions. ✅ Katakana word support — optionally annotate katakana loanwords (コーヒー → koohii) too, a lifesaver in the very first months of study. ✅ Handles dynamic pages — infinite scroll, single-page apps, and live-updating content get furigana as they appear, with careful throttling so pages stay fast. ✅ Respects the page — text that already has furigana is left untouched. Forms, code blocks, and editable areas are never modified. Turning the extension off restores the page exactly. ✅ Accurate readings — powered by the kuromoji morphological analyzer with a full Japanese dictionary, so 今日 reads きょう in context, not こんにち. Okurigana are kept out of the ruby text: 読み方 becomes 読(よ)み方(かた), the way real furigana is typeset. PRIVACY — NOTHING LEAVES YOUR BROWSER Yomikata collects no data. No analytics, no accounts, no external servers. The entire dictionary ships inside the extension and every page is analyzed locally on your machine, so it also works offline. The only thing stored is your own settings (reading style and your per-site on/off list) in Chrome's own sync storage. PERFECT FOR - JLPT students (N5–N1) reading native material - Anyone using NHK News, Wikipedia, or novels for immersion - Teachers preparing reading material - Heritage speakers brushing up their kanji Yomikata (読み方) means "the way to read" — that's all this extension does, and it does it well.
