Overview

Read selected Japanese with local furigana and Kana or Romaji conversion.

YOMI makes Japanese text easier to read without sending it to a server. Select Japanese on a webpage, then open YOMI from the toolbar, context menu, or keyboard shortcut. The Chrome Side Panel displays the original text with optional furigana and converts it into Kana or Romaji. Highlights Read selected or pasted Japanese beside the current webpage. Generate furigana locally using the dictionary packaged with YOMI. Switch between six formats: Original, Hiragana, Katakana, Half-width Katakana, Romaji, and Full-width Romaji. Copy converted text, adjust its size, and choose Mint or Washi styling with system, light, or dark appearance. Continue the same passage in the full reader for longer study sessions. Compare conversion formats, highlight changes, keep recent conversions, save word favorites, and export study materials. Import TXT, Markdown, and text-based PDF files in the full reader. DOCX import is not included in the extension. Work offline after installation with no account or API key. Privacy Selected, pasted, and imported text is processed on your device and is never uploaded. YOMI includes no analytics, advertising, tracking, or remotely hosted executable code. It declares no broad website host permissions or persistent content scripts. Drafts, preferences, and optional history and favorites remain in local browser storage and can be cleared from YOMI Settings. A selected phrase and its page title may remain temporarily in Chrome session storage while the panel opens. YOMI accepts that selection for up to five minutes and removes it when consumed, when its source tab closes, when YOMI data is cleared, or when the browser session ends. Chrome prevents extensions from reading selections on certain protected pages. On those pages, YOMI provides a paste-text fallback.
