Overview

Control playback speed on any video site. Your speed is remembered per site, so reloads and new episodes never reset it.

Ever set a video to 1.5x, reload the page, and land back at normal speed? Or finish an episode, only for the next one to start at 1.0 again? xPlayrate fixes that. Pick a speed once and the site remembers it — through reloads, through the next episode, through tomorrow. HOW IT WORKS Open a video, click the xPlayrate icon, and choose a speed. Use one of the eight presets from 1x to 4x, or type an exact value into the box: anything from 0.1 to 5, with two decimal places. If you prefer 1.15x or 1.3x to a round number, that box is for you. Your choice is saved for that website. The next time you open it, the speed is applied before playback begins, so there is no second of normal-speed audio before it catches up. FEATURES • Eight presets from 1x to 4x, plus a free-text field for any speed between 0.1 and 5 • Speed is remembered per website rather than globally — 2x for lectures, 1.25x for shows • Survives page reloads and moving to the next episode • Re-applies automatically if a player tries to reset the speed behind your back • Works with players embedded inside a page, not only the main video • The toolbar badge shows the current speed at a glance • An options page lists every site you have saved, so you can review or remove them PRIVACY xPlayrate is free. No ads, no tracking, no account, no analytics. The only thing it stores is the speed you picked and the site you picked it for. That data never leaves your browser: it lives in Chrome's own storage and syncs through your Google account, the same way your bookmarks do. Nothing is sent to me or to anyone else. Chrome will warn you that this extension can "read and change all your data on all websites". That warning appears for any extension that runs on every site, and here is exactly why it is needed. To set the speed before a video starts playing, the extension has to already be present as the page loads. It reads only the site's domain name, to look up which speed you saved for it, and sets the playback rate on video elements. It does not read page content, passwords, form data, cookies, or your browsing history. GOOD TO KNOW xPlayrate works with standard HTML5 video players, which covers the large majority of sites. A few players reset playback speed themselves; xPlayrate notices and re-applies your speed, though on those sites the change can be visible for a moment. Audio-only players are not currently supported. If xPlayrate saves you time, you can buy me a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/brxkensmile
