Overview
Sitemap finder, viewer and checker: find every XML sitemap on a site, validate it, export URLs to CSV. 100% local.
XML Sitemap Inspector is a sitemap finder, viewer and checker for Chrome. Click the icon on any website and it finds the site's XML sitemaps, shows their URLs as a readable tree and checks them for errors. No typing /sitemap.xml, no pasting URLs into an online validator. WHAT IT'S GOOD AT • Finding sitemaps other tools miss. It reads robots.txt, the page's own sitemap links and 24 common paths, follows sitemap indexes 10 levels deep, and opens gzipped and plain-text sitemaps. • Showing a site's structure instead of a wall of XML: a folder tree you can search, filter and sort. • Speed and a light footprint: sitemaps are streamed instead of loaded whole, so tens of thousands of URLs stay smooth, and nothing runs until you click. • Checking every sitemap against the sitemaps.org protocol and Google's guidelines, with examples and a fix for each problem. • Extracting URLs: copy them, download them as CSV, TXT or JSON, or export the whole site as one XML sitemap, a TXT list or an HTML page. • Light and dark themes that follow your system. • Privacy: everything runs in your browser, nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and it can't see your files, history or other tabs. Free, with no account. FIND EVERY SITEMAP Open the popup and the search starts on its own: Sitemap: lines in robots.txt, sitemap link tags in the page, 24 common sitemap locations, and the sitemap open in the current tab. An HTML page served at /sitemap.xml isn't mistaken for a sitemap. Duplicates are dropped, and every sitemap index lists its child sitemaps with their URL counts and a total. Each sitemap shows its type, URL count, last-modified date and how many errors or warnings it has, and the robots.txt link opens the file itself. When a sitemap lives on another domain, such as a CDN, one click on "Grant access" lets the extension read that domain too. If nothing turns up, the popup says where it looked and lets you add a sitemap URL by hand. Recent scans are kept, so reopening the popup on a site you just checked is instant, and Re-scan fetches everything again. Requests carry no cookies, so you see the public version of each sitemap, not a logged-in one. VIEW AND EXPLORE URLS Any sitemap opens in a full-tab viewer, as a collapsible folder tree or a flat URL list. Search with required words, -exclusions and "exact phrases", in the path or in the full URL. Filter by last-modified date range, priority, change frequency, images, hreflang language, folder, path depth, robots.txt verdict (Googlebot, Bingbot or all crawlers) and finding, and sort by URL, last modified, priority, change frequency, depth, images or alternates. Sitemaps with dozens of hreflang alternates per URL show language badges on each page's row, and image entries get a badge that lists up to 200 of their image URLs. Any URL opens in a new tab with one click. The XML tab shows each sitemap formatted, with line numbers and syntax highlighting, marks the lines that have errors or warnings, and clicking a finding's line number takes you to that line. The Raw file tab shows the original file as it was read. Light and dark themes follow your system. EXTRACT AND EXPORT URLS Copy the URLs you filtered, or download them as CSV, TXT or JSON. The XML tab downloads the formatted XML, and the Raw file tab the original file. To export a whole site, one button merges all of its sitemaps into one file without duplicates: an XML sitemap (split into parts with a sitemap index past 50,000 URLs or 50 MB), a TXT list with one URL per line, or an HTML page grouped by section. File names carry the site's domain and the date. CHECK AND VALIDATE Every sitemap is checked against the sitemaps.org protocol: malformed XML, a wrong root element or namespace, missing, invalid, overlong or repeated loc values, entries and tags in the wrong place (such as a url entry inside a sitemap index), invalid lastmod dates and changefreq or priority values, unescaped ampersands, the 50,000-URL and 50 MB limits, a non-UTF-8 encoding, and URLs that don't share the sitemap's scheme, host and port or sit outside its directory. It also checks SEO best practices: • duplicate URLs, http/https and www mixes, and utm_ tracking parameters; • URLs that robots.txt blocks for Googlebot, with the blocking rule and its line number; • sitemaps missing from robots.txt, sitemaps reached through a redirect, and unexpected Content-Type headers; • empty sitemaps and sitemap indexes nested inside other indexes; • stale sitemaps, future lastmod dates, and sitemaps where nearly every URL has the same lastmod, which usually means the generator stamps "today" on everything; • hreflang: invalid language and region codes, sets that leave out the page itself, a missing x-default, and URLs missing their alternates; • image, video and news sitemaps: required tags, value limits, news older than two days, and tags Google no longer reads, plus unknown extension namespaces and the obsolete mobile sitemap tag; • priority and changefreq tags, which Google ignores. Each finding comes with up to five examples and a short note on why it matters and how to fix it. The popup also tells you whether the page you're on is listed in the site's sitemaps and whether its canonical tag agrees. FAST AND LIGHT Sitemaps are read as a stream instead of being loaded whole, and the tree, the list and the XML tab draw only the rows on screen (the Raw file tab only the part you are looking at), so sitemaps with tens of thousands of URLs open and scroll smoothly. Every list the extension keeps in memory has a fixed limit, so even a huge sitemap can't eat up your memory. Nothing runs in the background except a scan you started: nothing at browser startup, and no scripts on any page until you click the icon there. YOUR LANGUAGE The interface is in English, Spanish and Thai. It follows your browser language, and you can switch it in the popup or the viewer. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Everything is processed and stored in your browser, and nothing the extension reads or stores is sent to us or anyone else. There are no accounts, analytics or tracking. It does nothing until you click its icon, and then works only on that tab: on the page it reads just the address, the canonical link and the sitemap links, and its only requests go to that site, for robots.txt, sitemap files and common sitemap locations (other domains only once you grant access, or where a redirect leads). It has no access to your files, your browsing history or your other tabs. Scans stay on your computer, and only the 10 most recent are kept. Like any request to a website, these requests reveal your IP address to that site. Made by Lotus Web Agency for our own daily SEO work, and free for everyone.
