Overview
Use xml beautifier offline to format xml in a tab: indent, highlight, fold nodes, minify and see the first error with its line.
Xml beautifier turns a messy one line blob into clean code that is easy to read, right in its own Chrome tab. Paste it, drop it in or pull it from the page you are on, and the xml beautifier tool lays it out with indents and colors in a blink. It is an xml beautifier offline by design: your data never leaves your computer. 🚀 How to start in 4 steps 1. Click the icon on the toolbar, or press Alt+Shift+X (Option+Shift+X on a Mac). 2. Paste text into the left side, or drag a file onto the page. 3. On a tab that shows raw markup, one click pulls the code right from it. 4. Pick 2 spaces, 4 spaces or Tab, then copy the result. Need to open xml file from your disk? Use Open file, drag it in, or click Try a sample to see how it all works. You can also select code on any page, right click it and choose the Beautify item from the menu to send just that part to the tab. Many people who work with xml beautify online the very files they would rather keep private; here it takes a right click. What you get: ✅ The result updates live as you type or paste ✅ Colors for tags, attributes, values and comments ✅ Fold any node, or use Collapse all and Expand all ✅ Minify in one click and see how many % smaller it got ✅ Copy the result, or Download it in UTF-8 ✅ A dark theme that follows your system Choose your xml formatting once and it sticks: 2 spaces, 4 spaces or Tab. Nothing else is touched. Text, quotes, entities, comments, CDATA, the declaration and DOCTYPE stay just as they were; only the white space between tags changes. That is why the xml code Beautify mode gives you is safe to put in a diff, a commit or a code review. Need the opposite? Switch to Minify and the whole document shrinks to one line, ready to paste into a request or a test, without a trip to an online xml formatter. When the markup is broken, you see the first error, not a wall of red: ➤ the line and column where it breaks ➤ a short note in plain words, like "the tag is never closed" ➤ Go to line, which jumps right to the spot ➤ a wavy underline in the input at the exact place ➤ a check mark once the file is well formed again In this sense it works as a well formed xml validator: every tag closed, quotes in place, one root. It does not check your data against a schema (XSD or DTD), and it does not fix broken code for you. It shows where the problem is, and you fix it. It is also a simple xml reader for long feeds, SOAP replies, sitemaps and configs. As an xml file viewer it handles files up to 10 MB: it draws just the lines on the screen, so it scrolls fast even when it is huge, while an xml viewer online can slow down on data that big. Up to 1 MB, the result follows every key you press; on bigger ones it waits for a short pause. To view xml file contents from a tab that shows a local file, Chrome asks for one thing: turn on Allow access to file URLs in the extension settings. Or skip that step and use Open file, which always works. Why not a website? To format xml online, you switch tabs and wait for a page to load. With an xml beautifier online, you also paste your data into a site you do not control. Here the xml pretty print is ready as you type, nothing leaves your computer, and it keeps working on a plane. Privacy, in short: - No server, no account, no AI - The text you paste is never saved or sent - Settings like mode and indent stay in Chrome storage on your computer This xml beautifier Chrome extension asks only for activeTab, scripting, contextMenus and storage. It reads a page when you click, and just the tab you are on. It lets you pretty print xml with a shortcut, so it fits the way you already work. With it on your toolbar, there is little reason to beautify xml online. FAQ ❓ Does it change my data? No. Only the white space between tags changes. Minify takes that same white space out again. ❓ Will it keep my comments? Yes. Comments, CDATA, entities and quotes are kept as they were, so it is a beautifier xml developers can trust. ❓ What if my markup is not well formed? You see the first error with its line and column, and Go to line takes you there. ❓ Does it work with no internet? Yes. Unlike an online xml beautifier, it runs fully on your computer and keeps going when the Wi-Fi drops. ❓ Do I need an account? No. There is no sign up and no login. Install it and it works. ❓ Where does my text go? Nowhere. It stays in the open tab and is gone when you close it. A SOAP reply with tokens has no place in an xml formatter online. ❓ Is there a size limit? Up to 10 MB at a time. Skip the online xml beautify tool: install xml beautifier, click the icon and make any markup easy to read in a second.
