Overview
A calm, gliding pointer that paces your reading line by line. Stay focused and keep your place on any web page.
Keep your place on any web page. LinePilot glides a calm pointer through the text at the pace you choose, so your eyes always know where to go next. Reading slows down when you lose your place: you drift to the wrong line, skip back, and read the same sentence twice. LinePilot gives your eyes one steady thing to follow, and fades each line once you've finished it, so you always know where you left off. NOT A SPEED-READING GIMMICK LinePilot doesn't flash single words at you or promise you'll read three times faster. You read whole lines, the way you normally do, at a pace you set. It's like running a finger under the line, without the effort. HOW TO START 1. Open something long: an article, a blog post, documentation. 2. Press Control+Shift+L on Mac, or Alt+L on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. Or click the LinePilot icon and press play. 3. LinePilot finds the article, skips menus, sidebars and sticky headers, and begins at the first line you can see. To start somewhere else, Alt-click (Option-click on Mac) the word you want. WHAT IT DOES • A pointer that glides: a soft highlight or a thin underline eases from word to word and slides back to the start of each line. On dark pages it adjusts so it stays visible. • Natural rhythm: short words get less time and long words more, with a short pause at a comma and a longer one at a full stop. The average still matches the speed you choose, anywhere from 50 to 600 words per minute. Switch it off for a strictly even beat. • Read text fades: each line turns gray once you've finished it. • Jump by sentence: go back to re-read a sentence or skip ahead to the next one. It recognizes sentence ends in many languages, even with citation marks like [1]. • Scrolls like turning a page: when the line reaches the lower part of the window, one smooth scroll brings it back up. Scroll yourself and it waits for you. • Push pace, if you want it: an optional training mode raises your speed by a few words per minute at a time while you read. • Six pointer colors. Changes save as you make them and apply to every open tab. WHILE YOU READ Space: pause or resume ← →: previous or next sentence ↓ ↑: slower or faster, 20 words per minute a step Esc: stop Click any word: move the pointer there GOOD FOR • Long articles, essays and newsletters • Documentation and technical guides • Course reading and research on the web • Anyone who drifts between lines or loses focus on long pages PRIVATE BY DESIGN LinePilot runs entirely inside Chrome. It never sends the pages you read, or anything about them, anywhere. • No account and no sign-in • No analytics, ads or tracking • Works offline; it makes no network requests • Settings are saved in Chrome on this device GOOD TO KNOW • Chrome warns that LinePilot can "read and change all your data on all websites". It needs to read a page's text to pace it and draw the pointer over it, and it stays idle until you start reading. • Chrome doesn't let any extension run on its own pages (such as chrome:// pages and the new tab page), on the Chrome Web Store, or inside its built-in PDF viewer. • You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. LinePilot is free, with no account. Help: https://linepilot.app/support Questions or ideas: support@linepilot.app Privacy policy: https://linepilot.app/privacy
