Zovo Shield - Block Ads and Trackers
Overview
Block ads and trackers, see each site’s privacy grade, hide cookie banners with one switch, and get a weekly tracker digest.
Zovo Shield blocks ads and trackers in Chrome. It's built on uBlock Origin Lite, the open-source blocker by Raymond Hill, and adds a privacy grade for each site, a weekly Digest of what was blocked, one-click cookie-banner blocking and a library of ready-made rules for popular sites. Every blocking feature is free. Out of the box it uses 6 filter lists with 18,952 rules, plus the regional list for your browser's language, and dozens more are a click away, including 38 regional lists and lists for cookie banners, pop-overs and other annoyances. KEY FEATURES - Ad and tracker blocking with Chrome's built-in request rules. The toolbar icon shows how many requests Shield blocked on the page you're on. - Per-site control. If a site misbehaves, lower its filtering mode from the popup, or turn filtering off for sites you trust. Shield remembers your choice for each site. - Cookie banners. Switch on cookie-banner blocking in the popup to hide many cookie prompts and pop-overs, and to turn cookies down on some sites. It's off until you turn it on. - Your own rules. Create a custom filter from the popup to remove anything the lists miss, or apply a pack from the Zap library to tidy up a popular site in one click. - A privacy grade and a weekly Digest. The popup grades each site by how many third-party domains it contacted today, and the Digest shows the requests Shield blocked over the past week. You can switch off the weekly summary notification in Settings. HOW IT WORKS 1. Install Zovo Shield and it starts blocking right away. 2. Open the popup on any site to see its grade and how many requests were blocked, or change how strictly Shield filters that site. 3. Open Settings to pick filter lists, back up your rules or read the Digest. FREE AND PRO All blocking, every filter list, custom filters, the zapper and picker, cookie-banner blocking and the Digest are free. An optional Zovo membership adds 13 more Zap library packs (21 in all) and shows every past week of the Digest from this update on, up to a year, instead of 2 weeks. The same key turns on Pro in 15 other Zovo extensions. Membership is sold by Zovo through zovo.one. Stop paying and blocking carries on exactly as before. PRIVACY Blocking happens inside Chrome. Shield doesn't send your browsing anywhere and needs no account. Its counts stay on your device. If you add a Pro key, Shield checks it with Zovo's license server twice a day and when you open its settings, sending the key and the Shield extension identifier. PERMISSIONS Access to all sites, scripting and user scripts let Shield hide page elements, run the cosmetic fixes from its filter lists and apply your own rules on the sites you visit. Declarative net request blocks requests and shows the blocked count on the toolbar icon, and its feedback permission lets developer mode list which rules matched. Web request lets Shield count requests for the Digest, on your device only. Storage and unlimited storage keep your settings, rules and counts, and active tab lets the popup work on the page you're on. Alarms schedule the weekly Digest and the license check, notifications show the optional weekly summary, and offscreen compiles filter lists you import and filters you write yourself. OPEN SOURCE Zovo Shield is free software under the GPLv3, like uBlock Origin Lite. The source code is at github.com/theluckystrike/zovo-shield. UPDATES After some feature updates, Zovo Shield opens a short What's new page in a background tab. You can turn this off in Settings.
