Turn web pages into clean, useful Markdown in one click. Web → Markdown extracts the main content from the current page and removes common distractions such as advertisements, navigation menus, cookie banners, related-content blocks, popups, and other page chrome. The result is ready to paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Obsidian, a notes app, a documentation repository, or any Markdown editor. No account. No server. Your content stays on your device. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open an article, guide, documentation page, or blog post. 2. Click Web → Markdown. 3. Choose a template and image mode. 4. Copy or download the cleaned result. You can also use: • Right-click → Convert page to Markdown • Right-click selected text → Convert selection to Markdown • Alt+Shift+M → convert the current page and copy the result immediately CLEAN CONTENT EXTRACTION Web → Markdown focuses on the content you actually want to keep. It removes common unrelated elements, including: • Advertisements and sponsored blocks • Navigation bars and menus • Cookie and consent banners • Related or recommended posts • Newsletter and subscription popups • Sidebars and promotional blocks • Scripts, forms, embedded frames, and other non-content elements The extension uses reader-style extraction and falls back to semantic page elements when needed. If you select text before converting, Web → Markdown can process only that selection. MULTIPLE OUTPUT FORMATS Choose the format that fits your workflow: • Markdown — clean headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, and tables • HTML — a simplified standalone HTML document • JSON — structured metadata together with Markdown, HTML, and plain text • Plain text — readable content without markup • ChatGPT — source-aware Markdown prepared for use as AI context READY-MADE TEMPLATES Use a standard export or pick a template: • Clean Markdown — a direct, uncluttered Markdown document • Obsidian YAML — includes frontmatter with title, source, author, site, clipping date, publication date, and tags • ChatGPT — wraps the page as clearly identified source material • Claude — prepares the page as context for a follow-up request • Quote + source — formats content as a Markdown quote with the original URL and date IMAGE OPTIONS Control how images are handled: • Absolute URLs — keep images linked to their original web addresses • Skip — remove images from the exported result • Save to Downloads — download article images into a dedicated folder and rewrite Markdown image paths LOCAL CLIP HISTORY The extension keeps your latest 50 clips in local Chrome storage. Open a previous clip from the popup or Options page and copy it again without revisiting the original website. History is stored only on your computer. Web → Markdown does not upload it to a remote service. SITE-SPECIFIC RULES Some websites have unusual layouts. For those pages, you can create a rule for the current domain: • Set a CSS selector that always identifies the main content, such as article or .post-content • Add CSS selectors for elements that should always be removed, such as .related or #comments Rules are saved locally and applied automatically the next time you convert a page from that domain. USE WEB → MARKDOWN FOR • Saving articles and tutorials to a personal knowledge base • Preparing reliable source material for ChatGPT or Claude • Clipping research into Obsidian • Moving documentation into Markdown files • Archiving readable copies of useful pages • Extracting selected passages with their source • Converting content to HTML, JSON, or plain text • Removing page clutter before sharing text PRIVACY BY DESIGN Web → Markdown performs conversion locally in your browser. • No account is required • No backend service is used • No page content is transmitted to us • No analytics or advertising SDK is included • No personal data is sold • Settings, site rules, and clip history remain in chrome.storage.local The extension accesses a page only after you explicitly click the extension, use its context menu, or trigger its keyboard shortcut. PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED • activeTab and scripting — read and clean the page you choose to convert • contextMenus — provide Convert page and Convert selection actions • storage — save local settings, site rules, and clip history • clipboardWrite and offscreen — copy Markdown through the keyboard shortcut • downloads — save images only when you select the Save to Downloads option LIMITATIONS Chrome does not allow extensions to run on internal browser pages such as chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, and some other protected pages. This is a Chrome security restriction. Pages whose main content is rendered inside inaccessible third-party frames may not be fully extractable. Results can also vary on highly interactive applications that do not expose readable page content. Web → Markdown is designed to make web content portable, private, and immediately useful — without adding another account or cloud service to your workflow.
