Selext

Highlight text anywhere, then search it on Google or send it to ChatGPT to summarize, explain, or turn into a picture.

Selext puts a small toolbar next to any text you highlight, so acting on that text takes one click instead of five. Normally, doing something with a sentence you just read means copying it, opening a new tab, pasting it, typing an instruction, and pressing send. Selext collapses all of that into a single click on a four-button bar that appears right where you selected. WHAT THE BUTTONS DO • Search — runs your selection as a Google search. • Create image — asks ChatGPT to draw a picture of what you highlighted. • Summarize — asks ChatGPT to summarize it, answering in the language the text is written in. • Explain — asks ChatGPT to explain it in plain language, defining any jargon. HOW IT WORKS The bar appears when you highlight two or more characters, and disappears when you click elsewhere or press Escape. The buttons are icons, so the bar stays small enough not to cover the text you are reading; hover any button and a tooltip tells you exactly what it does. It works inside text boxes too: highlight part of a comment, a caption or anything you are typing in a form and the bar appears above the field. Password fields and other masked fields are left alone. The bar also stays on top of a site's own pop-ups, so it is never hidden behind them. Selext uses your own logged-in ChatGPT session in a normal browser tab. There is no API key to paste, no account to create, no subscription, and no separate service in the middle. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Nothing is collected, stored, or sent to us. The extension has no server, no analytics, and no accounts. • It stores nothing on your device either: no history of what you selected, no settings, no database. • Your selection is only ever used to build the address of the tab you asked to open. If you press Search, it goes to Google exactly as if you had typed it in. If you press one of the ChatGPT buttons, it goes to ChatGPT the same way. • If a selection is too long for a button, that button greys out and tells you the limit, rather than quietly sending a shortened version.
