Overview
Text to speech that reads any page aloud and highlights every word as it is spoken. Free TTS for web pages, PDF, Docs and Word.
Readalix is a read aloud text to speech (TTS) reader for Chrome. It reads a page out loud in a natural voice and highlights every word as it is spoken, so you can always see which line is being read. Select any text and press play. The sentence gets a light tint, and each word is highlighted as it is read. Most of the voices run offline on your own device, so a read keeps going with no internet connection. WHERE IT READS Web pages. Select a paragraph and press play, or point at anything on the page and read from there to the end. PDF files. Readalix reads a PDF aloud inside Chrome's own PDF viewer. The viewer does the highlighting itself, so the word stays exact at any zoom or rotation. Scanned PDFs are read too. Google Docs. It reads a document aloud right in the editor and highlights each word in the document itself. Word Online. It reads a Word file aloud in the browser and highlights it there. Almost no other reader does this. Presentations. Slide text is read aloud with the same highlighting, in PowerPoint for the web and in Google Slides. Text boxes. It reads back what you typed into an input or a comment box, which is the quickest way to check a reply before you send it. VOICES Browser voices are free with no limit: the ones already installed on your computer, with nothing to set up. Piper gives you over 100 natural voices in more than 30 languages. Each is a small one-time download, then it speaks offline on your device. Kokoro adds 28 premium English voices with exact per-word timing. One shared download covers all of them, and they run offline too. Supertonic is a single on-device model that speaks 31 languages, so one download covers every one of them. Microsoft offers over 300 online neural voices in more than 70 languages, with no API key and nothing to download. Gemini and OpenAI add expressive cloud voices when you paste your own API key. Every voice has a play button, so you can hear it before you choose it. WHAT YOU CAN DO Pause on the exact word being read, then carry on from that same word instead of the start of the sentence. Change the voice or the speed while it is still reading, anywhere from 0.25x to 4x. Let the page scroll along with the voice, and jump back to the reading position with one click. Start a read with your own keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+R by default) or from the right-click menu. Pick your own highlight colours, or use one of 12 ready-made colour sets. Save a read as an audio file, or as a video that shows one sentence at a time with the word being read highlighted. Files go to your downloads or to a Readalix folder in your Google Drive. WHO IT IS FOR Dyslexia and focus. Seeing each word highlighted as it is read helps you keep your place on the page. Language learners. Hear how words are really pronounced in more than 30 languages, and slow the voice down until it is clear. Long articles and tired eyes. Listen to an article or a document the way you listen to a podcast, at up to 4x speed. Writers and proofreaders. Your own text sounds different when you hear it read aloud, so clumsy sentences and repeated words are easy to notice. Anyone who would rather listen than read. PRIVACY Piper, Kokoro and Supertonic create speech on your own machine, so the text never leaves your browser. If you pick a cloud voice, only the sentence being read is sent to that provider so it can be spoken. Your own API key stays on your device, is never synced and is never sent to us. Spoken audio is cached on your device so a re-read plays instantly, and you can clear it with one click. PRICE Browser voices are always free, with no limit. Every other voice comes with a free allowance of 20,000 characters a day, roughly 14 pages or about 22 minutes of speech. When it runs out, reading carries on with a browser voice. To remove the daily limit: $5 a year, or $15 once. The interface is available in 52 languages. Website: https://readalix.com/ Privacy: https://readalix.com/privacy Support: support@readalix.com
