Overview

Types your text into Google Docs key by key, with natural pauses, small typos and corrections, like a real person writing it.

SynthTyper types text into Google Docs for you, one key at a time, the way a person actually writes. Paste what you want typed, press Start, and it goes in at a believable pace: quick through the easy words, a short beat after a comma, a longer stop at the end of a sentence, and now and then a typo that gets noticed and fixed. Every character is entered as a keystroke, so the document fills in gradually instead of appearing all at once like a paste. HOW TO USE IT 1. Open a document and click where you want the text to start. 2. Click "Synth" in the menu bar, next to Help. 3. Paste your text, choose a speed and press Start Typing. You can pause whenever you like, change any setting while paused, and carry on from the same spot. There is a Stop button in the menu bar the whole time it's running, and keyboard shortcuts too: Alt+Shift+S opens the panel, Alt+Shift+K pauses or resumes, Alt+Shift+Q stops. You can change them in Chrome's shortcut settings. WHAT MAKES IT LOOK REAL - Human rhythm: the time between keys changes with the letters involved, the length of the word and how far into the text it is, the way real fingers speed up and slow down. It pauses at the end of sentences and paragraphs. - Varied typos: a neighbouring key, two letters swapped, a doubled or skipped letter, a missed Shift. Some are caught straight away and some a few letters later, and every one gets fixed. - Rewording: now and then it types a similar word first, then goes back and changes it. - Going back to add words (beta, off by default): leaves a word out and adds it in a few words later. - Breaks: it can step away for a few minutes every so often, like someone getting a coffee. WHAT YOU CAN ADJUST - Speed: Slow, Normal, Fast and Turbo presets, or your own range in milliseconds that you can save as a custom preset. - Finish in a set time: tell it how many minutes the whole text should take and it paces itself to match. A time estimate is shown under the text box. - Sittings: split a long text into 1 to 5 sessions. It stops after each one and picks up where it left off next time you open the same document. Stop also keeps the rest for later. - Natural and thinking pauses: longer breaks after full stops and commas, and the occasional longer stop. You choose how long. - Typo and backspace chance, with QWERTY, Turkish Q and Turkish F keyboard layouts. - Draft mode: give it a rough first version alongside the final text. It types the draft wording first, then deletes it and writes the final wording, word by word. - Progress panel: keep it open to see the percentage and character count, or close it and let SynthTyper type with nothing on screen but your document. - Light and dark theme. SMALL THINGS THAT HELP - If you click into the document while it's typing, it pauses by itself instead of typing in the wrong place. - Whatever is in the text box is kept if you close the panel or the tab, until the typing finishes. - Open or drop a .txt, .md, .html or .docx file instead of pasting. - The toolbar icon shows progress, and SynthTyper keeps your screen from going to sleep during a long run. Both the auto-pause and the keep-awake can be switched off from the toolbar icon. Curly quotes, long dashes and other characters that aren't on a normal keyboard are typed as their plain keyboard versions, and invisible characters copied from the web are skipped. GOOD TO KNOW - SynthTyper types plain text. Line breaks become new paragraphs, but bold, headings, links and other formatting are not copied. Add them afterwards. - Keep the document tab open and in view while it types. Chrome slows down tabs in the background. - Please use it in line with the rules of your school or workplace. SynthTyper is a typing tool; it doesn't write anything for you. PRIVATE BY DESIGN SynthTyper works entirely inside your browser. There is no account, no server and no analytics, and it never sends your text anywhere. Your settings, and any text it's still waiting to type, are saved only on your own computer and deleted when the typing is done (or after 14 days for an unfinished sitting). It only runs on Google Docs and Slides pages and asks for two permissions: storage, for your settings, and power, to keep the screen awake while it types. Click into a text box first, then start typing from the Synth menu. Does it work in Edge, Brave or Opera? It should work in any browser that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Is it free? Yes. There are no paid features and no sign-up. Nothing happened when I pressed Start. Click inside the document so the cursor is blinking where you want the text, then open Synth and press Start again. If it still doesn't type, reload the page. Found a bug or have an idea? Post it in the Support tab on this page. A short note about what you were doing helps a lot.
