WebSubtitle – Add Subtitles to Web Videos

Add local and online subtitle files to web videos with per-video sync and styling.

Search for subtitles online, translate them on your device, or try live English captions. ■ Key Features • Load and search for subtitles - Apply subtitle files stored on your computer to web videos. - Search for subtitles on OpenSubtitles and apply them to your video. - Find subtitles in a local folder; WebSubtitle remembers the folder you choose. • Adjust timing and appearance - Correct a fixed timing offset or subtitles that gradually drift out of sync. - Customize subtitle position, font size, background, and more. - Manage multiple videos and subtitle tracks individually. • Edit subtitles - Edit subtitle text and timing in the web editor. - Reapply your edited subtitles to the video. • On-device subtitle translation - Translate existing subtitles and add the result as a new subtitle track. - Translation runs only when you start it, and the original subtitles are preserved. - Requires Chrome’s on-device translation and support for your selected language pair. • Save and reload subtitles - Keep frequently used subtitles in “My Subtitles.” - Save and manage local and online subtitles even without a video. - Save subtitles and settings for individual videos and load them again later. - Automatically restore saved subtitles and settings on supported YouTube videos. • Live English captions (beta) - Transcribe English speech from the selected tab on your device and show it as captions. - English (en-US) only, for up to 35 minutes per session. - Available in supported Chrome environments. ■ How to Use 1. Install WebSubtitle and activate the extension on a video page. 2. Load a subtitle file or search for subtitles on OpenSubtitles and apply them. 3. Adjust subtitle timing and appearance to match the video. 4. Manually save any subtitles or per-video settings you want to use again. In supported environments, you can also start live English captions instead of using a subtitle file. ■ Using Live Captions • Starting and stopping - The first time you start live captions, WebSubtitle asks for permission to access tab audio. If you decline, you can still use subtitle files. - Chrome may need to download its speech recognition model. - Live captions keep running after you close the panel. To turn them off, click the stop button on the video. - They stop automatically when you pause or seek, when the video ends, or when you switch tabs. They also stop if the captions or the stop button can’t be displayed. - Once stopped, they don’t resume on their own, so you’ll need to start them again. • Scope and limitations - Uses all audio from the selected tab, not your microphone. - Recognition may contain errors or miss some speech. - Exporting, editing, and translating live captions are not supported. - Audio and live captions are not saved or uploaded, and recognition does not fall back to a cloud service. ■ Storage and Privacy • Saved subtitles - “My Subtitles” and per-video saved data are managed separately. - Data is stored in your current browser only when you explicitly save or update it. Searching for or applying subtitles does not save them automatically. - Saved data is not synced to the cloud, and these storage features are not available in Incognito mode. - Deleting browser data, your profile, or the extension may remove saved data. Do not use this feature as a backup. • Settings and folders - Default display settings may sync through Chrome sync. - Remembered folders are accessed read-only, and their contents are not stored. • On-device processing - Local subtitles, content being edited, and subtitle text used for language detection or translation are not sent to WebSubtitle servers or external translation services. - Chrome may download resources needed for translation. - When you search OpenSubtitles, your search information is sent to OpenSubtitles. ■ Compatibility and Notes - Works with standard HTML5 videos that the browser can access. - Embedded videos from other sites may require additional access permissions. - Features may be limited on DRM-protected content, restricted iframes, custom players, or certain fullscreen implementations. - Automatic restoration of per-video saved data works on supported YouTube watch pages after you activate the extension. On other sites, you can load saved data manually. - Translation availability depends on your device, Chrome version and settings, and selected language pair. Machine translation is not always accurate. - If version 1.7.0 disabled the extension while it waited for permission approval, you may need to turn it back on in Chrome after updating. ■ Support and Feedback For problems or suggestions, please use the Chrome Web Store’s “Support hub.” Optional in-extension feedback lets you send a message directly to the developer. Only after you choose Send and grant the requested site access, WebSubtitle sends your message, product ID, extension version and a submission ID. It does not automatically attach subtitle text, page or video URLs, titles, filenames or diagnostics. The service uses Cloudflare Workers and D1. Feedback is available to the developer for 90 days; older records are scheduled for daily deletion, which can be delayed, and the administrator can delete them sooner.
