PureWord is a free profanity filter for Chrome that blocks swear words and vulgar language on every website. It runs locally in the browser and replaces detected terms with clean alternatives or asterisks. It is designed for shared devices, work environments and family browsing. It is private, fast and works on YouTube, search results and social media without collecting browsing data. PureWord filters content automatically on every page you visit. You do not need to configure lists before it starts working. Asterisk masking is on by default so bad words are hidden the moment you install. You can switch to clean replacements at any time in Options. The extension is lightweight and runs on Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. --- ## What PureWord Filters + Base forms, plurals and tenses, leetspeak variations and Unicode lookalikes + Confusable Unicode that uses mathematical or accented characters to bypass simple filters + Detection is case insensitive and respects word boundaries so protected words such as class, passage and hello are left unchanged + Common separators between letters and zero width characters that are used to hide words --- ## Key Features + Automatic Content Filtering: Censors offensive words and phrases on every website you visit. Filtering starts at document idle and continues as pages change, so dynamic content that loads after the initial page is also checked. + Mask with Asterisks and Clean Replacements: Hide bad words behind asterisks by default or show clean replacements instead. The clean replacement list is maintained in a public GitHub repository and the masked mode always uses asterisks that match the original word length. + Highlight Filtered Words: Optionally highlight what has been filtered so you always know what changed. When highlight is on, filtered terms show a subtle underline and a tooltip with the original term. + Parental Control and Recovery: Lock Options with a password so filtering rules remain active on shared or family computers. Passwords are hashed with PBKDF2, and a one-time recovery code is generated when you enable the lock. If you forget the password, the recovery code lets you reset it and set a new password. + Custom Word List and Blocked Words: Add your own words and replacements on the Custom Replacements tab to tailor filtering to your needs. Custom entries are combined with the default list. You can also right click any word on a page and select Block this word to block it permanently. Blocked words are always masked with asterisks. + Per Site Controls and URL Lists: Enable or disable filtering for specific sites from the popup or use domain-based URL lists in Options. Two modes are available. Excluded URLs keeps PureWord active everywhere except the domains you list. Included URLs keeps PureWord active only on the domains you list. Domain matching covers subdomains so a single entry covers the whole site and search results and redirects do not cause false positives. + Toolbar Badge with Count: The toolbar icon shows how many words were filtered on the current page. Counts below 1000 show the exact number, counts from 1000 to 9999 show K formatting and counts above 10000 show 10K plus. You can turn the badge off in Options under Show Filter Count on Icon and the count will still be available in the popup. The badge is hidden automatically on non-web pages such as chrome, edge, about and file pages. + Context Menu and Shortcuts: Right click a selected word to block it without opening Options. Right click a page to stop PureWord on that site when you use excluded URL mode. Keyboard shortcuts are available for toggle filtering on the current page and for opening Options. The defaults are Ctrl+Shift+F for toggle and Ctrl+Shift+O for Options. + Settings Backup and Reliability: Export your configuration to a file and restore it at any time from the Backup and Restore section. The backup includes masking style, highlight setting, badge setting, URL lists, custom replacements, blocked words and per site disabled pages.
