Minimalistic One-click Tab Internet ON/OFF
Overview
Cut off the internet for one tab with a single click, while your other tabs stay online.
How it works: click the toolbar icon on the tab you want to cut off. The page stays exactly as it is, so you can keep reading and using it, but it can't load anything new or send anything out. Click the icon again to reconnect. There are no settings or pop-ups. The icon shows the state of the tab you're on: • Blue wifi: this tab has internet. • Wifi with a red line through it: this tab is cut off. GOOD FOR • Using a web tool or reading a page without it sending what you type or do back to its owner • Stopping a page from tracking you, loading more ads or refreshing itself • Seeing how a website behaves with no connection WHAT GETS BLOCKED IN A CUT-OFF TAB • Everything the page tries to load or send: links, refreshes, images, videos, background updates • The website's "background helper" (Chrome calls it a service worker), which many sites use to fetch things behind the scenes • New tabs and pop-ups the page opens: they start cut off too WHAT IT CAN'T DO • Anything already connected when you click keeps going until it finishes, such as a live chat feed that's already open. Anything new is blocked straight away. • Video and voice calls made inside a web page can't be blocked by this extension. • A page can still ask Chrome to look up a website's address ahead of time. Your internet provider can see which website was looked up, but no page content is sent. • When a cut-off tab goes to a website it hasn't been on before, that site's background helper may occasionally get one request out before the block catches up. • It doesn't work on Chrome's own pages, like Settings or the Chrome Web Store, because Chrome doesn't let extensions change those. • Every tab goes back online when you restart Chrome or when this extension updates. A closed tab you reopen comes back online too. THINGS YOU MIGHT NOTICE • Refreshing a cut-off tab, or clicking a link in it, shows Chrome's "This page has been blocked by an extension" page. That's expected: click the icon to reconnect, then refresh. • While one tab of a website is cut off, your other open tabs of that same website may partly stop working, because they share that site's background helper. Reconnect or close the cut-off tab to fix it. • If you open a link in a new tab from another tab of that same website, it may show the "blocked" page for a split second and then load normally. • Chrome won't put cut-off tabs to sleep to save memory, so they don't lose their page. They keep using some memory until you reconnect or close them. PRIVACY This extension collects no data and sends nothing anywhere. Everything happens inside your browser. About the permissions Chrome shows when you install: • "Block content on any page": needed to cut a tab off. • "Read your browsing history": Chrome shows this because the extension needs to know which website a cut-off tab is on, so it can also block that site's background helper. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
