HaoSub adds dual subtitles to YouTube and can also serve as a language-learning assistant. Original captions and a live translation stay in sync with the video. What you can do: - Dual, translation-only, or original-only display. Original-only does not send subtitle text to a translation service. - Optional translation with a key you provide. The built-in translator may be rate-limited at busy times. Choosing an optional engine asks for confirmation and permission only at that moment. Existing translation consent is not asked again. - Custom size, color, opacity, background, line width, timing, appearance presets, and in-player shortcuts. Original and translated size can be set separately. - Optional learning mode (Beta): built mainly for English learners, especially Simplified Chinese speakers studying English. Other languages are still being adapted. Off by default. Options can export the vocabulary book as CSV. - Smarter sentence breaks for auto-generated captions, so fragments are less likely to be translated as whole lines. - Translation follows playback instead of requesting the whole track up front, and stays more stable through ads. - Adjust from the popup, the Options page, or the YouTube player control bar (gear-menu fallback if the bar is missing). Optional caption source language follows YouTube by default. - If a line fails to translate, or translation is busy, the original stays on screen, with a visible status message. - Translate into 19 target languages. The interface is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. - Translation is off until you turn it on. The Use HaoSub captions switch, when off, leaves YouTube’s native captions alone. First-use disclosure: the Popup, Options page, and YouTube-player settings panel show that subtitle text and the target language will be sent to Google Translate. The Enable translation button inside that disclosure is the only explicit confirmation. Choosing Later keeps translation off and remembers that choice so the prompt does not auto-open on every video. Privacy, in brief: - Off by default. Nothing is sent just because you installed it. - After you confirm, subtitle text and the target language go from your browser to Google Translate over HTTPS. There is no developer relay and no API key. - Recent translations are kept in memory (up to 1,000, 30 minutes) and in a session cache for the current tab and video (up to 4,000; cleared when you leave, close the tab, or after about 30 minutes unused; not written to disk). Subtitle text is not written to Chrome sync or local settings storage. - No ads, analytics, or telemetry. Works on YouTube watch pages that already have captions.
