Compress PDFs locally in Chrome — no uploads, no account. SafeCompress PDF reduces PDF file size directly in your browser. Your file is processed locally in this browser using bundled libraries (pdf.js + pdf-lib). No server upload code was found in the extension source, no extension permissions and no host permissions are requested (manifest.json: permissions: [] / host_permissions: []), and no account is required. Strict Content Security Policy (script-src 'self') and MV3 packaging are declared. [Bundled-library provenance and manifest CSP are static findings; offline/no-network behavior requires runtime QA — see checklist below.] Best for • Scanned documents and image-heavy PDFs • Email attachments and upload forms with size limits • Private documents you prefer not to send to online services For text-heavy or already-optimized PDFs, the result may be similar in size or occasionally larger — this is expected with this method. Try a different level or keep the original if it is already optimized. How it works 1. Choose a PDF file 2. Select a compression level 3. Click Compress PDF 4. Download the smaller file Compression levels — choose the tradeoff • Better quality — lightest compression, highest visual quality, larger file (code: Low / scale 2.0) • Balanced — good balance of quality and size (Medium / scale 1.5) • Smaller file — strongest compression, smallest file, may reduce visual quality (High / scale 1.0) Pages are rendered to JPEG at quality 0.7 and rebuilt into a new PDF. Stronger compression means lower visual fidelity. Important to know — limitations This method rebuilds the PDF by rendering each page to an image and creating a new PDF from those images. Visual appearance is preserved, but the output may not preserve selectable/searchable text, form fields, annotations, bookmarks/outlines, accessibility tags, or original document metadata. Quality depends on the level you choose and the content of your PDF. Encrypted/password-protected PDFs are not supported and will show an error. Large files are processed fully in browser memory and may be slow or fail on very large documents. Always keep your original file and compare before sharing.
