Overview
Type a keyword in the address bar to jump to or search any site. Aliases, tab bundles, shared lists, a Keywords page, usage stats.
Wyrd turns the address bar into a launcher for your own keywords. Type >, press Space, then a keyword. You could set: > yt opens youtube > yt movie trailers searches youtube for "movie trailers" > jira PROJ 123 opens issue PROJ-123 > dentist call a keyword under a keyword > anything else falls through to your usual web search You choose the keywords. A keyword opens a page, a search (an address with %s where your words go) or tab bundles. A search keyword on its own opens the site's home page. EVERY DAY - Save this page: click Wyrd's icon on any page. You get its address (edit it freely), a few keyword suggestions and Save. A keyword that is already taken is pointed out before anything is replaced. - Forgot a keyword? Type what it is about: > dent finds the keyword filed under Dentist, and one typo is forgiven. A keyword that does not exist says so, lists the closest ones and offers to create it. - Aliases (lib -> @library), keywords that open several pages at once, numbered arguments (%1, %2) and sub-keywords (dentist/call, dentist/book). - Right-click search: select text, right-click, and search it with one of your keywords - your three most used, or the ones you pick. - The Keywords page: > /home opens a page listing every keyword you can type, grouped by category, with a search box; add, edit and delete yours there. - History: > dance/history shows every address a keyword pointed at before. - Usage stats, a map of which one-letter keywords are free, change history with Undo, automatic backups, and import / export (JSON or CSV) with a preview before anything changes. - Backup files: save everything Wyrd keeps to a file and restore it after a reinstall or on a new computer, with a reminder after 90 days without one. Optional: keep the backup up to date in a folder you choose, or in your own Google Sheet (below). - Optional: register Wyrd as a search engine in Chrome and type keywords without the >. Settings shows the exact address to copy. SWITCH ON MORE WHEN YOU WANT IT A first install opens one tab, the Keywords page, with a short welcome (try > g cats, add your own, restore from before), and shows only the basics. The Features page lists the rest, each with its own switch: - Tab bundles: > /clear research saves this window's tabs and closes them, and > tabs/research brings them back (so does > research alone, when nothing else is called that). > /clear without a name picks one for you. > /dedupe keeps one tab per site and saves the rest (> /dedupe exact closes only copies of the same page), and > /save puts one tab aside with #tags. After /clear or /dedupe the icon shows a check mark until you open the popup, which lists your recently saved bundles, each with its keyword (hide the list, or turn it off). A Tab bundles page and a side panel that stays open while you browse. Your 10 most recent tab bundles follow you through Chrome sync; older ones stay on the computer that saved them, and > tabs/<name> for one that is not on this computer explains why instead of searching the web. Needs access to your open tabs, asked for only when you switch it on. - Google Sheet backup and sync: sign in with Google and Wyrd keeps a daily backup of your keywords and settings, and every tab bundle (not only the 10 most recent) for every computer where you use the same Google account, in one Google Sheet in your own Google Drive. Removed Wyrd by mistake? Install it again, sign in, and it finds your sheet and offers the backup. Wyrd can open only the sheet it made, nothing else in your Drive. - Reminders: "dentist, every 3 months" - the icon shows when one is due. - Your own right-click searches, up to 12, under names you choose. - Define & translate: right-click a word for its dictionary entry, or translate a sentence with Chrome's built-in translator, on your computer. SHARE KEYWORDS WITH FAMILY OR A TEAM - Subscribe to a list of keywords kept in a Google Sheet, a file in a GitHub repository, or a JSON or CSV file at any https address: up to 5 Google Sheets in the Family & Friends view, up to 10 lists of any kind in Teams. - Your own keywords always win. Each list has a short name, so a keyword hidden by one of yours is still reachable: > team/wiki. - Lists refresh every 6 hours and when you ask, and Wyrd notes what each refresh added, changed or removed. - Add to a list through the list's own Google Form, or commit straight to a GitHub list with a token you keep on this computer. - Share links (http://wyrd.invalid/?q=team%2Fwiki) for people who have the same list; they see a confirmation page before anything opens. - Invite links: copy a link to a list; whoever opens it in Wyrd finds the list's address filled in, ready to preview and subscribe. - For IT: an organisation's Chrome admin can give everyone the same lists with a Chrome policy for Wyrd (public list addresses only). - Starter packs: a ready-made list of suggested keywords to tick and add. - Categories, sorting help, and "Copy for an AI": a text you can paste into any AI chat to sort your keywords into categories, with a preview before its answer changes anything. An optional AI helper (Teams view, off by default) can send that text to a provider you set up with your own key. - All keywords for an AI: copy every keyword you can type as text, or save it as a file, for Claude, ChatGPT or any assistant. PRIVACY - No developer server, no Wyrd account, no analytics, no remote code. The developer never receives any of your data. - Wyrd makes no network request unless you set something up, and then only these: reading a shared list or a starter pack you asked for (or a list your organisation's Chrome policy sets), a commit to a GitHub list you gave a token for, the text you send with the optional AI helper, with Define switched on the one word you look up (api.dictionaryapi.dev), and, if you sign in with Google for Google Sheet backup and sync, your tab bundles and a backup of your keywords to and from your own Google Sheet. Translations are made on your computer. - Your keywords, settings and your 10 most recent tab bundles follow you through Chrome sync. Usage counts, backups, change history, older tab bundles and any token or key you enter stay on this computer (if you sign in with Google for Google Sheet backup and sync, your tab bundles, usage counts and change history also go to your own Google Sheet); tokens and keys are never synced. - Wyrd reads your open tabs only with Tab bundles switched on, and only when you clear, save or dedupe them. Without Tab bundles it sees one tab: the page in front when you click its icon, to fill in the Save box. - It never reads the content of the pages you visit. LIMITS - Chrome's sync storage gives about 8 KB to your keywords: roughly 170 with short addresses. Keyword tools shows how much is used and refuses a save that would not fit, without losing anything. - A shared list can hold up to 2,000 keywords (512 KB).
