Overview

Word count across all tabs of a Google Docs document: per-tab breakdown, whole-document total and an optional word goal.

Your Google Docs document is split into tabs, and the built-in word count only ever tells you about the tab you are looking at. So the one number you actually want — how long is the whole thing? — is the one number you cannot get without downloading every tab and pasting it somewhere else. This extension puts that number on the page. Open a document, click the counter, and you get an estimated whole-document total — plus, whenever the tab list can be read and matched to the text, a per-tab breakdown underneath it. Nested tabs are indented the same way they are in the sidebar, and the tab you are currently in is highlighted. Set a word goal for a document and the panel also shows how many words you still have to write, with a progress bar. The goal is remembered per document, so a thesis and a short story do not share a target. How to use 1. Open a document with tabs. 2. Click the "Word count: all tabs" button at the bottom left of the page. 3. Read the per-tab list and the total. Press the refresh arrow after you write more. 4. Optional: type a word goal to see how far you have left to go. What it does • Adds up the words in one document and shows the whole-document total • Lists each tab separately when the tab list can be read, indented for sub-tabs, with the current tab marked • Shows words remaining against a word goal you set for that document • Remembers a different goal for each document, plus a default for new ones • Runs entirely on your device — no account, no sign-in, no server of ours • Reads the text through the document's own export, so nothing is copied out • Works in light and dark, in English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish About accuracy Every number is an estimate and is labelled as one in the panel. Word-splitting rules are not identical to the built-in counter, so totals can differ slightly, and headers, footers or footnotes may be included. Use it to see how a long multi-tab draft is growing, not as a legal word limit. If the tab list cannot be matched confidently, the panel says so and falls back to one combined total instead of showing a breakdown that might be wrong. There is also a one-click switch to force the combined total yourself. Independent extension, not affiliated with Google.
