The WebSocket inspector DevTools forgot — live capture & decode of WebSocket traffic.

Wirepeek is a WebSocket inspector for Chrome DevTools. It captures and decodes the live WebSocket traffic of the page you're debugging — the frames the native Network tab shows as opaque blobs, or misses entirely. Because Wirepeek patches WebSocket at the page level (before libraries like socket.io grab the native reference), it sees frames other tools miss. What Wirepeek does: CAPTURE • Live capture of every WebSocket frame (sent and received), with direction, timestamp and size — surviving page reloads. • Captures iframe traffic too, with a "Main frame only" toggle (on by default) to keep the noise out. DECODE — one "Try to decode" switch, many formats: • socket.io / engine.io — see event: "chat message" instead of 42["chat message",{...}]. • Deep JSON — expands JSON nested inside string fields (SignalR, ActionCable, and friends). • JWT — header and payload, decoded. • base64 — JSON or text hidden in a base64 field. • Compression — gzip, deflate / zlib, LZ4, and Discord's shared zlib-stream. • Binary serialization — MessagePack, CBOR, Thrift Compact. • JSON embedded in binary frames. READ • Pretty-printed, collapsible JSON tree with syntax coloring. • Inline image preview for base64 images (PNG / JPEG / GIF / WebP …). • Encrypted / opaque blobs are flagged in red, so you don't waste time trying to decode the undecodable. FILTER, SEARCH, EXPORT • Filter by direction, source (multi-select), event name, or text — substring or regular expression. • Search looks inside decoded content, not just the raw frame. • Timeline markers for page navigation and capture start / stop. • Copy any frame (raw or formatted), or export the whole session — or a selected range — as JSON.
