Whistle - Bookmark Launcher and Manager

Launch bookmarks from the keyboard. Short aliases, fuzzy search, and library.

Whistle helps you find and open Chrome bookmarks quickly. Give a bookmark a short name, type it in search, and press Enter. Search opens in its own window, so Gmail, Trello, and other sites cannot steal your keystrokes. Open Whistle • Command+Shift+Space (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Space (Windows/Linux) — opens search from any tab • Or click the Whistle icon in the toolbar Search • Type part of a title, website, folder, or short name • Narrow the list: a: short names only, f: folders only, host: one website • With an empty search box, Whistle shows bookmarks you use often (or your Bookmarks bar if you are new) • Nothing matched? Open the address as typed, or search the web, without leaving the window • Enter opens a new tab (reuses a tab if that same address is already open) • Shift+Enter opens in the tab you are on • Command+Enter (Mac) or Ctrl+Enter (Windows/Linux) opens in the background Short names (aliases) • Give messy bookmarks a short name such as gh, mail, or my bank — up to 20 characters • Right-click a page, link, or tab → Whistle – Add alias • If that exact page is not bookmarked yet, save it and pick a folder (same idea as Chrome’s Add bookmark) • Addresses that differ only by a # section are treated as different pages, like Chrome • Back up short names, pinned slots, and appearance to a file — optionally every bookmark too • The toolbar icon can show the short name for the page you are on • Right-click the toolbar icon → Library, Analytics, or Settings (click still opens search) Keyboard shortcuts • Ctrl+Shift+1 / 2 / 3 open three pinned bookmarks (Control on Mac, not Command — avoids screenshot shortcuts) • Change any Whistle shortcut: Settings → Customize shortcuts, or chrome://extensions/shortcuts Does not use Command+Space (Spotlight) or Control+Command+Space (emoji picker). If the hotkey does nothing, or another app opens instead, another program may use the same keys. The most common clash is 1Password Quick Access — it also defaults to Command+Shift+Space (Mac) and Ctrl+Shift+Space (Windows). Change Whistle or 1Password under Settings → General → Shortcuts (1Password) or chrome://extensions/shortcuts (Whistle). Other apps that may use the same combo while focused: VS Code / Cursor (parameter hints), JetBrains IDEs, Slack (mute in a Huddle), Mattermost (call mute). Reassign Whistle if you rely on those shortcuts daily. After a Whistle update, open chrome://extensions/shortcuts once — Chrome sometimes keeps old bindings until you reset or reassign them. Tip: If Command+Shift+Space opens 1Password instead of Whistle, change one of them in Settings. Whistle → Customize shortcuts; 1Password → Settings → General → Shortcuts. Tidy up • Find pages you saved more than once and remove the extras — the Bookmarks bar copy is kept when possible • Bookmark the page you were on without leaving the search window Library • Browse every bookmark in a full page — search, sort, list or tiles • Optional dates (added / visited / Whistle); folder sidebar when you want a tree • Large libraries load in pages — show more as you go • Open, edit, set a short name, or remove from the ⋯ menu • Also open from the toolbar: right-click the Whistle icon → Library Analytics • See recent and frequent Whistle opens over the last 7, 30, or 90 days • Library tab: recently visited, top sites, recently added, and safe-to-delete candidates • Alias / duplicate / age snapshot; switch grid or list layout • Launch timestamps in Analytics stay on this computer for at most 90 days (separate from anonymous usage counts sent to Nelstack) • Also open from the toolbar: right-click the Whistle icon → Analytics Privacy Whistle does not upload your bookmarks. No third-party analytics SDKs. Whistle sends anonymous aggregate usage counts to Nelstack (launcher opens, tab opens, alias changes, backup exports, page opens — never bookmark content or alias text). Short names and pinned slots can sync with your Chrome account. How often you open something and recent Whistle open timestamps (≤90 days) stay on this computer. History permission is used for last visit times in Library and safe-to-delete checks in Analytics. Whistle does not need permission to read the content of websites. Desktop Chrome and Edge.
