Just browse used vehicles normally and WhenNew adds the historical price context. SEE THE PRICE BEHIND THE LISTING A used vehicle’s asking price tells you what it costs today. WhenNew helps show where that number started. Depending on the vehicle and information available, WhenNew can show: • Original or base MSRP • Difference between MSRP and the current asking price • Percentage below or above MSRP • Percentage of MSRP retained • Vehicle age • Annualized MSRP-to-current-price change • Optional inflation-adjusted MSRP • Exact configuration match or possible MSRP range For example: 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE Asking price: $23,995 Base MSRP when new: $28,700 $4,705 / 16.4% lower today If a listing says “Call for price,” “Get ePrice,” or otherwise hides the asking price, WhenNew can still show the historical MSRP when available. MATCHES MORE THAN THE MODEL NAME The MSRP of the same model can vary substantially by configuration. Trim, drivetrain, body style, cab, bed length, engine, transmission, battery, and other details can all affect the original price. WhenNew examines the vehicle information available on the page and matches it against its built-in historical MSRP database. Results are labeled according to how specific the match is: • Exact match — enough information is available to identify the relevant configuration • Partial match — some configuration information is missing • MSRP range — several valid configurations remain possible • Unavailable — there is not enough reliable information to provide a price WhenNew does not turn an uncertain match into a made-up exact MSRP. If the detected vehicle is wrong or incomplete, you can choose another configuration or use “Wrong vehicle?” to select the correct year, make, and model. BUILT-IN ORIGINAL MSRP LOOKUP You do not have to be on a vehicle listing to use WhenNew. Open the extension and choose “Look up a vehicle” to search the built-in database by year, make, and model. It does not estimate present market value, predict future prices, determine whether a vehicle is a good deal, or replace a professional appraisal. MORE THAN 28,000 HISTORICAL MSRP RECORDS WhenNew includes more than 28,000 source-backed MSRP records covering the U.S. vehicle market, with primary coverage spanning model years 1995–2026. Coverage includes: • Gasoline and diesel vehicles • Hybrids • Plug-in hybrids • Electric vehicles In the current database, more than 97% of in-scope model years have either exact configuration pricing or a verified complete MSRP range. When only a range can be established, WhenNew displays a range. It does not present one end of the range as an exact price. The MSRP database is bundled with the extension and loaded locally in small partitions as needed. Some vehicles and configurations may still be unavailable, and WhenNew will say so instead of guessing. COMPARE BUYING POWER ACROSS YEARS WhenNew also includes a simple inflation comparison tool. Highlight a U.S.-dollar amount on a webpage, right-click, and choose: WhenNew: Show in [year] dollars For example: $33,699 today would have been approximately $26,119 in 2020 The calculation uses bundled U.S. CPI-U data. This feature runs only when you explicitly choose it. WhenNew does not scan ordinary webpages looking for unrelated prices. DESIGNED TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY WhenNew does not replace or rearrange the vehicle listing. If enabled, it stores only the vehicle’s year, make, model, and encounter count on your device. It does not save the VIN, listing URL, asking price, or timestamp. PRIVATE AND LOCAL-FIRST WhenNew is designed so the core product works entirely inside your browser. Vehicle detection, MSRP matching, depreciation calculations, and inflation comparisons are performed locally. Preferences, manual corrections, paused-site settings, and optional missing-price records remain in Chrome local storage on your device. WhenNew requires webpage access so it can identify vehicle listings and place MSRP information beside them.
