Overview

WBlur – Blur & hide messages on WhatsApp Web, WA Web, and WhatsApp Business Web.

🔒 Keep your conversations private on WhatsApp Web, even with people around you. WBlur is a privacy screen for WhatsApp Web: it hides your messages, chat previews, photos and names behind a soft blur. Point at anything with your mouse to read it, move away and it's hidden again. People next to you, behind you, or watching your shared screen only see blurred shapes, while you keep chatting as usual. No account, no setup and nothing to learn: add WBlur, open WhatsApp Web, and your chats are private right away. Choose exactly what to hide, lock WhatsApp Web with a PIN when you step away, and let WBlur switch itself on for your working hours. It works with WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Business Web, in Chrome and Chromium-based browsers such as Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc. 🙈 WHAT YOU CAN HIDE 💬 Messages: every message in the open chat, including links and stickers. 🆕 All but the latest: keep your last 1 to 10 messages readable for context and hide everything older, even when you scroll back. 📨 Chat list previews: the last-message line under each conversation, so new messages never show in plain text. 🖼️ Photos and videos: images, videos, GIFs, stickers, link previews, locations and media in replies, separately from the text. 🗂️ Media gallery: thumbnails in the contact info panel, the media gallery and the full-screen viewer. ⌨️ Your typing: the message box, so nobody can read what you're writing before you send it. 👤 Profile pictures: in the chat list, in group chats and in contact info. 🏷️ Names and numbers: group, community and business names, phone numbers and shared contact cards. ⚙️ Every option has its own switch, so you decide exactly what stays visible. Your choices are saved, so there's nothing to switch on again after you restart your browser. ✨ HOW IT WORKS 🖱️ Hover to reveal: only the item under your mouse is shown, for as long as you point at it. ⚡ One-key toggle: turn WBlur on or off with Alt+X (you can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts), or with the switch in the toolbar menu. 🫣 Quick peek: hold Alt+Z to see everything for a moment, and let go to blur it all again. 👀 Reveal all on hover: optionally show everything while your mouse is over the WhatsApp page, and hide it all again as soon as it leaves. 🎚️ Blur strength: choose how strong the blur is, from light to strong. 🔍 Clear search: optionally see your chats normally while you search, so you find the right one quickly. 🎯 Only the chats you pick: blur just the chats you choose, and show all the others normally. 🚀 Instant: changes apply right away, without reloading the page. 🔐 LOCK IT WITH A PIN 🛑 Privacy screen: covers WhatsApp Web until you type your PIN (4 to 12 digits). 👆 Lock in a second: with one click, or with Alt+L. ⏱️ Auto-lock: after 1, 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes without using WhatsApp, or whenever WhatsApp Web opens. 🗝️ Every tab at once: all your WhatsApp Web tabs lock and unlock together, and the lock stays on when you reload the page. 🙅 Nothing gets through: while it's locked, WhatsApp can't be clicked or typed into. ⏳ Slows down guessing: after every 5 wrong PINs, you wait 30 seconds before trying again. ℹ️ It hides your chats from people nearby; it doesn't encrypt anything. ⏰ ON AND OFF BY ITSELF 🗓️ Your hours: set a schedule, for example on at 9:00 and off at 17:00 on workdays, and WBlur switches itself at those times. 🌙 Any hours: the days start as your region's workdays, and hours that end after midnight, like 22:00 to 6:00, work too. ✋ Still in your hands: you can turn WBlur on or off yourself in between, and the schedule takes over again at its next time. 💤 Never misses: if your computer was asleep at a switch time, WBlur switches as soon as it wakes up. 🎬 A DAY WITH WBLUR 🌅 9:00: your schedule switches WBlur on as you start work. 👋 10:30: a colleague stops by your desk, and your chats are just blurred shapes. 🖥️ 14:00: you share your screen in a meeting, and WhatsApp stays blurred in the call. ☕ 15:15: you step away for a coffee, and WhatsApp Web locks itself after 5 minutes. 🏠 17:00: WBlur switches itself off for the evening. 🔄 KEEPS UP WITH WHATSAPP WhatsApp changes its website from time to time. WBlur checks that its chat list blurs still find what they hide, and if one doesn't, its menu and a "!" on its toolbar icon tell you right away instead of failing silently. Updates reach WhatsApp tabs that are already open, with no need to reload. 💡 TIPS ✅ Alone at your desk? Keep your last few messages readable. In a meeting? Blur everything. ✅ Need a quick look? Hold Alt+Z instead of turning WBlur off. ✅ On a shared computer? Turn on "Lock when WhatsApp Web opens". ✅ Only one or two sensitive chats? Use "Blur only selected chats" and leave the rest readable. ✅ Pin WBlur to your toolbar to reach every option in one click. 📍 USEFUL WHEN YOU'RE 🏢 Working in an open office, a co-working space or a café 📚 Studying in a library or a classroom 🚆 Using your laptop on a train, a plane or a bus 🖥️ Sharing your screen in Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, presenting or recording 📽️ Showing your screen on a projector or a TV 👨‍👩‍👧 Using a shared or family computer 💼 Talking to clients, patients or customers on WhatsApp Business 🤔 WHY NOT JUST CLOSE WHATSAPP? ❌ Closing WhatsApp Web: you miss messages, and lose the chat you were in. ❌ A privacy filter on your screen: it only helps from the side, not from behind or in a screen share. ❌ Turning your screen away: awkward, and no help at all on a call. ✅ WBlur: WhatsApp stays open and usable, and only what you point at can be read. 🛡️ PRIVACY BY DESIGN WBlur runs entirely inside your browser. It never collects, stores or sends your messages, and it has no ads, no analytics, no account and no tracking. Your settings are saved by your browser, which copies them to your other computers if you use browser sync. Your PIN never leaves your computer, and it's stored only as a hash, never as the PIN itself. WBlur only runs on web.whatsapp.com and asks for three permissions: storage, to remember your settings; scripting, to apply your changes to WhatsApp tabs that are already open and to read a chat's name when you add it to your list; and alarms, to switch WBlur on and off on your schedule. 🌐 IN YOUR LANGUAGE WBlur is available in 55 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. It follows your browser's language automatically. 💻 ALSO ON MAC AND FIREFOX 🍏 WBlur for Mac blurs the WhatsApp desktop app the same way, with a Touch ID lock, a schedule and an adjustable blur: https://wblur.com 🦊 WBlur for Firefox is the same extension, on the Firefox add-ons site. 👉 GET STARTED 1️⃣ Add WBlur to Chrome and pin it to your toolbar. 2️⃣ Open WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com). If it's already open, WBlur starts there right away. 3️⃣ Click the WBlur icon and choose what to hide. For the privacy screen, set a PIN in the Lock tab. ❓ QUESTIONS Does it work with WhatsApp Business? Yes. Business accounts use the same web app, and every option works there too. Can people see my WhatsApp Web chats when I share my screen? Hidden items stay blurred in screen shares and recordings, unless you point at them. Does WBlur collect or keep my messages? No. WBlur only changes how WhatsApp Web looks on your screen. It doesn't collect, save or send your messages, contacts or anything about you. Can the other person tell that I use WBlur? No. WBlur only blurs your own screen. Nothing changes in WhatsApp itself, and read receipts work exactly as before. Does it work in Edge, Brave, Opera and Arc? Yes. They all install extensions from the Chrome Web Store. In Edge, allow extensions from other stores once. How do I change the shortcuts? Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and choose new keys for turning WBlur on or off (Alt+X) and for locking it (Alt+L). Something isn't blurred. What can I do? Check that WBlur is on, and that the switch for that option is on too. WBlur works in regular browser tabs, not in sidebar panels such as Opera's. If its icon shows "!", WhatsApp changed its page, and the fix comes with the next update. What if I forget my PIN? Remove WBlur from your browser and add it again. Your PIN is stored only on your computer, so that removes it. Why does WBlur say WhatsApp changed its page? WhatsApp updated its website, and one of the chat list blurs no longer finds what it hides. The fix comes in a WBlur update, which reaches your open tabs by itself. Does it work on my phone? WBlur is for WhatsApp Web on a computer. On a Mac, WBlur for Mac also blurs the WhatsApp desktop app. Does WBlur hide WhatsApp notifications? No. Notifications are shown by your computer, outside the WhatsApp page. To keep them private, turn off message previews in WhatsApp Web's notification settings. Can I use it in incognito windows? Yes, once you allow it: open chrome://extensions, click Details under WBlur and turn on "Allow in Incognito". Does it work with WhatsApp's dark theme? Yes. The blur works the same in the light and the dark theme. Will I lose my settings when WBlur updates? No. Updates keep all your settings, and apply to your open WhatsApp tabs by themselves. Is WBlur free? Yes. The extension is free, with no ads, no subscription and no account. Does it change my WhatsApp account or messages? No. WBlur only changes how the page looks on your computer. Your account, messages and contacts are untouched, and turning WBlur off shows everything as normal. ℹ️ WhatsApp is a trademark of WhatsApp LLC.
