Start a watch party and watch together in perfect sync, on anything that plays in a browser. Video chat and voice chat are built in. WatchBear is a free watch party extension. Open a video, start a room, share the code, and everyone's playback sits on the same frame. Press play, pause, or skip and the whole room follows. See each other on camera, talk, type, and react in a side panel beside the film. WHAT IT DOES Host a watch party with friends, family, or a long-distance partner. Watch movies together, binge a series, or run a remote movie night. Every player stays on the same second, so nobody has to ask "are you at the same part yet?" Start a room (we call it a Bear Den), share the short code, and people drop in within seconds. VIDEO CHAT, FREE FOR EVERYONE Switch your webcam on and your face appears as a small tile in the panel, beside the conversation and never over the film. Similar extensions charge for this or leave it out. Here it costs nothing. It starts off every time you arrive, so joining never means being seen before you are ready. Audio and picture travel straight between participants, peer to peer, and never pass through our servers. Quality tunes itself as a room fills, so faces never steal bandwidth from the movie. WHERE IT WORKS Works on YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, and other sites with a standard player. It finds the main video on whatever page you open, so there is no compatibility list to check before you invite anyone. Netflix gets dedicated handling for its custom player. Everyone still needs their own access to whatever is playing. This syncs playback, it does not send anything to your friends. NO SCREEN SHARING, BY DESIGN Nothing about your screen is broadcast to anyone. Sharing a film over a call compresses it, drops frames, and loses audio alignment, and it eats the host's bandwidth for the whole group. Instead, each person's own player runs at full quality and only the playback position travels over the network. HOW IT DIFFERS Seeing and hearing each other costs nothing. If you declined, allow it in Chrome's site settings and try again. Another app is holding the device: close the other call, then switch back on. Your camera switched itself off: quality drops, and the camera can go too, when a machine is struggling, so the film keeps playing. Switch it back on whenever you like. No video found: let the page play once, then reopen the panel. QUESTIONS Q: Does it cost anything? A: No. The service has never shipped one, which is why an extension is needed to hold everyone at the same point in the film. Q: Which sites does it work with? A: YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, and other pages built on a standard video player. It looks for the main video on whatever page you open rather than checking a list of approved services, so a site nobody has tested still works. Q: How many people can join a watch party? A: No. The extension keeps an eye on how hard your machine is working and lowers the picture quality it sends, or drops the camera entirely, before the film itself can stutter. Q: Can I use it on my phone? A: Not yet. Chrome on Android and iOS has no extensions, so this runs on a computer. Q: Do I have to appear on screen? A: No. It starts off, and plenty of rooms run on voice and messages alone. Q: Is it safe to install?
