Wall Molding Calculator: Picture Frame, Wainscoting, Board and Batten
Overview
Free wall molding calculator for picture frame molding, wainscoting, board and batten and accent walls, with cut list.
Plan your wall molding and wall trim in under a minute. Enter your wall width and height, choose a style and get a balanced layout drawn to scale, a full cut list, the number of 8 ft sticks to buy and the count of 45 degree miter cuts. Free, no account, works in inches and centimeters. This wall molding calculator (wall moulding in the UK) was built by Trim Wall Haus, a maker of pre-cut wall molding kits, wall trim molding and decorative wall panels, after thousands of customers asked the same questions: how many boxes fit on my wall, how high should the chair rail be, how far apart should the battens go and how much trim do I need to buy. The answers are now one click away in your browser. WORKS FOR EVERY KIND OF WALL TRIM Use it for classic panel molding for walls, picture frame molding on walls, wainscoting and half wall paneling, board and batten, geometric wall panels and modern accent wall molding. It is just as useful for wood wall trim, MDF wall moulding panels and peel and stick molding, because the layout math is the same: equal frames, equal gaps and the right amount of trim. Planning a decorative wall for a dining room, a wall panel design for a living room or a DIY panel wall in a bedroom? Start with the size of your wall and the calculator does the rest. SIX CALCULATORS IN ONE EXTENSION 1. Picture frame molding calculator Picture frame molding (also called box molding, panel molding or picture frame wall trim) turns a flat wall into a classic paneled wall. The calculator splits your wall into equal frames with equal side margins and equal gaps, above and below an optional chair rail. You get the frame width and height to the nearest 1/8 inch, the number of horizontal and vertical pieces, the total linear feet with your waste allowance and the number of miter cuts. Typical results with a 36 in chair rail, 6 in side margins and 4 in gaps on an 8 ft high wall: • 8 ft wall: 2 upper and 2 lower frames, upper frames 40 in wide, about 61 linear ft of molding, 8 sticks • 10 ft wall: 3 upper and 3 lower frames, upper frames 33 3/8 in wide, about 81 ft, 9 sticks • 12 ft wall: 3 upper and 3 lower frames, upper frames 41 3/8 in wide, about 92 ft, 11 sticks • 14 ft wall: 4 upper and 4 lower frames, upper frames 36 in wide, about 113 ft, 12 sticks • 16 ft wall: 4 upper and 4 lower frames, upper frames 42 in wide, about 124 ft, 14 sticks Set the chair rail to 0 for a single row of tall frames, which is popular behind beds, sofas and TV walls. 2. Wainscoting calculator Wainscoting panels cover the lower part of the wall under a chair rail. The wainscoting calculator follows the one-third rule that designers use: the rail sits at about one third of the ceiling height. It then sizes the panels under the rail with a 3.5 in reveal at the sides, between panels and above the baseboard. Wainscoting height by ceiling: • 8 ft ceiling: chair rail at 32 in, panels about 21 in tall • 9 ft ceiling: chair rail at 36 in, panels about 25 in tall • 10 ft ceiling: chair rail at 40 in, panels about 29 in tall Wainscoting panel count by wall width (9 ft ceiling): • 8 ft wall: 3 panels about 27 3/8 in wide, about 38 ft of trim including the rail • 10 ft wall: 4 panels about 25 5/8 in wide, about 48 ft • 12 ft wall: 5 panels about 24 5/8 in wide, about 59 ft • 14 ft wall: 5 panels about 29 3/8 in wide, about 65 ft • 16 ft wall: 6 panels about 27 7/8 in wide, about 76 ft Bathroom wainscoting is usually set a little higher, 36 to 42 in, to keep the panels above the splash zone of a sink or tub. A taller rail at half the wall height gives a more modern wainscoting look in dining rooms and hallways. 3. Board and batten calculator Board and batten walls use vertical battens with a top rail, either at half height or full height. The board and batten calculator, also a batten spacing calculator, asks for the batten width and your target spacing. It then returns the number of battens and the exact clear gap between them, so every gap is identical and the wall ends with a batten in both corners. It also gives the top rail length and the stick count. Board and batten spacing with 3 in battens and a 16 in target: • 8 ft wall: 6 battens, 15 5/8 in apart • 10 ft wall: 7 battens, 16 1/2 in apart • 12 ft wall: 8 battens, 17 1/8 in apart • 14 ft wall: 10 battens, 15 3/8 in apart • 16 ft wall: 11 battens, 15 7/8 in apart • 20 ft wall: 13 battens, 16 3/4 in apart Most board and batten walls use 12 to 16 in between battens. Narrow spacing (10 to 12 in) feels busier and more traditional, wide spacing (18 to 24 in) feels calm and modern. For board and batten height, half-wall designs usually stop at 48 to 60 in, about the height of a light switch or a little above, and full-height walls run to the ceiling. 4. Accent wall grid calculator A grid accent wall, sometimes called a square grid or shaker grid wall, is one of the most popular accent wall ideas and accent wall design ideas for living rooms, bedrooms and offices. It also works as a batten board wall when you use wider battens. Enter the number of columns and rows and the batten width. The accent wall calculator returns the size of every opening, the number of full-height verticals and the number of short horizontal pieces, so you can cut everything in one session. 5. Arched wall molding calculator Arched frames with a flexible curved top are a soft, modern take on picture frame molding. Enter the number of arches and the calculator gives the arch width and height, the radius, the length of each flexible arch top and every straight piece. 6. French step corner molding French molding uses an outer frame and an inner frame with small stepped corners, a look seen in Parisian apartments. The calculator dimensions the outer frames, the inner frames, the inset and every corner step, so even this detailed design becomes a simple cut list. POPULAR WALL SIZES IN ONE CLICK 8 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft, 14 ft, 16 ft and 20 ft walls with 8, 9 and 10 ft ceilings are built in. These are the sizes people search for most, so the common layouts are ready without typing. Change any number and the layout redraws instantly. WHAT YOU GET ON EVERY LAYOUT • A live wall preview drawn to scale • A cut list with piece name, quantity and length each • Total molding in linear feet, plus your waste percentage (10 percent by default) • A stick count based on cut optimization for 8 ft (96 in) stock or any length you enter • The number of 45 degree miter cuts for frames • Inches with fractions to 1/8 inch, or centimeters • See the design on a photo of your own wall: tap the 4 corners and the layout is placed in perspective • Download a PDF plan with drawing, cut list and kit • Save your designs and open the calculator in the Chrome side panel HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WALL • Measure the width at floor, middle and chair rail height and use the smallest number. Very few walls are perfectly square. • Measure the height from the finished floor to the ceiling in at least two places. • Note every outlet, switch, window and door. Let an outlet fall inside a frame rather than across a molding line, and shift the whole layout by up to 2 in if needed instead of notching a piece. • For baseboards, enter the baseboard height so panels start above it. HOW TO INSTALL WALL MOLDING (QUICK GUIDE) 1. Paint the wall first if the molding and wall will be the same color, or plan to paint everything together for a seamless look. 2. Mark a level chair rail line, then mark frame corners from the cut list. 3. Cut 45 degree miters for frames with a miter saw or a miter box. Cut square ends for battens and rails. 4. Fix with construction adhesive or molding glue plus 18 gauge brad nails into studs where possible. Peel and stick molding works on smooth, clean paint. 5. Fill nail holes, caulk the edges, then prime and paint. A typical 12 ft accent wall takes 3 to 6 hours with a pre-cut kit and a full day or more when cutting everything yourself. MDF, WOOD OR PEEL AND STICK? • MDF wall molding is smooth, stable and paints beautifully. It is the most common choice for wainscoting panels and picture frame molding in living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. • Solid wood trim is strong and can be stained, but it can move with humidity and costs more. • Peel and stick molding is fast and renter friendly, and suits smooth walls with light pieces. • In bathrooms, use sealed or moisture resistant material and a semi-gloss paint. WALL MOLDING IDEAS BY ROOM • Accent wall living room: a full-height grid or tall picture frame boxes behind the sofa. Center the middle frame on the sofa or the fireplace. These are the accent wall ideas living room owners ask us about most. • Bedroom: picture frame molding or a board and batten wall behind the bed. A frame slightly wider than the headboard makes a strong focal point; a queen bed is 60 in wide and a king bed 76 in. • Dining room: classic wainscoting with a chair rail at one third of the ceiling height, with picture frame boxes above for a formal look. • Hallway and entryway: half wall paneling or board and batten protects the lower wall from bags, shoes and pets. • Staircase: frames that follow the stair angle, or a stepped board and batten pattern up the stairs. • TV wall: tall frames on each side of the TV and a wide frame above it. For a 65 in TV, plan a center opening at least 62 in wide. • Nursery and kids rooms: soft shaker panels or arched molding painted in a gentle color. • Home office: a grid or shaker wall behind the desk looks great on video calls. • Bathroom: wainscoting or board and batten at 36 to 42 in with moisture resistant material. STYLES AT A GLANCE • Picture frame molding: timeless, works in almost any room and suits traditional and modern homes. • Wainscoting: lower-wall panels under a chair rail, perfect for dining rooms, halls and bathrooms. • Board and batten: vertical battens with a top rail, a modern farmhouse favorite. • Shaker wall paneling: a flat grid of rails and stiles, clean and contemporary. • Arched wall molding: curved tops that soften a room, popular in bedrooms and entryways. • Half wall paneling: any panel style on the lower half of the wall, often with a chair rail. • Beadboard and shiplap: board-based alternatives; beadboard has narrow grooves, shiplap has wider horizontal boards. Use the accent wall grid calculator for spacing ideas. COLOR TIPS Painting an accent wall with molding is easiest when you install the trim first, then caulk and paint wall and trim together. Painting the molding the same color as the wall gives a tone-on-tone, high-end look and hides small gaps. A contrasting color (white trim on a dark wall, or a dark accent wall with matching dark molding) makes the frames stand out. Use eggshell on walls and satin or semi-gloss on trim for easy cleaning. The classic rule is one third of the ceiling height: about 32 in for an 8 ft ceiling, 36 in for a 9 ft ceiling and 40 in for a 10 ft ceiling. Standard wainscoting height in most homes is 32 to 36 in. A taller rail, up to half the wall, gives a more modern look. What is the best wainscoting height in a bathroom? 36 to 42 in is typical for bathroom wainscoting, so the panels sit above the backsplash and the splash zone around the tub. Keep the top at least 6 in above the backsplash. What chair rail height works with an 8 ft or 9 ft ceiling? About 32 to 36 in on an 8 ft ceiling and 36 in on a 9 ft ceiling. On a 10 ft ceiling, 36 to 40 in works well. Set the rail in the picture frame or wainscoting calculator and the panels resize automatically. How far apart should board and batten be? Most board and batten walls use 12 to 16 in between battens. Use the board and batten spacing calculator to turn your target into an exact spacing so the last gap is not narrower than the rest. How tall should a board and batten wall be? Half-height board and batten usually stops at 48 to 60 in. A common rule is two thirds of the wall height for a tall look, or one third for a classic wainscot look. Full-height walls run to the ceiling with a top rail at crown level. How many picture frame molding boxes fit on a wall? Most 10 to 12 ft walls take 3 frames per row and 14 to 16 ft walls take 4, with 4 to 6 in side margins and 3.5 to 4 in gaps. Frames that are slightly taller than wide usually look best. How much space should be between picture frame molding boxes? 3 to 4 in between frames and 4 to 6 in at the corners is a good starting point. The most important thing is to keep every gap the same. How much molding do I need for an accent wall? Add up every piece in the cut list and allow 10 to 15 percent for miters and mistakes. A 12 ft picture frame wall with upper and lower frames needs about 90 linear ft. The calculator does this math and tells you how many 8 ft sticks to buy. How do I calculate board and batten spacing by hand? Subtract the total width of all battens from the wall width, then divide by the number of gaps (battens minus one). The calculator does this for you and rounds to the nearest 1/8 inch. Can I use the calculator for a wall with a window or door? Yes. Calculate each section of wall separately, for example the part beside a window, or send your plan for a free design drawing and we will lay it out for you. Does it work in centimeters? Yes. Switch between inches and centimeters at the top. Your measurements convert automatically. Is this wall molding calculator free? Yes. No sign up, no ads and no tracking. Results are estimates: always measure your wall and check outlets, switches and windows before cutting.
