Overview

Give every tab its own volume. Boost quiet audio up to 600%, turn loud tabs down and mute one tab without muting the rest.

Chrome gives you mute and nothing else. This gives every tab its own volume slider. Drag it from complete silence up to 600%, so a quiet lecture recording, an old video or a muffled call replay is finally audible — and the tab that shouts at you can be turned down without touching anything else. WHAT IT DOES • Boost a tab up to 600%, or fade it down to a whisper • Every tab keeps its own separate level • A soft limiter sits after the volume control, so a big boost stays listenable instead of crackling • One-click mute, and unmute back to exactly the level you had • Optionally remembers the level you like for a website • A live meter shows what is actually reaching your speakers • Keyboard shortcut: Alt+Shift+V NOTHING IS RECORDED The tab's sound is passed through a volume control and played straight back out. It is never saved to disk, never analysed and never sent anywhere. There is no server, no account and no analytics. Resetting a tab releases its audio completely. On first install it opens its guide page on wiserwork.org once, so you know how to use it; that page is an ordinary web page and the site privacy policy covers it. PERMISSIONS, EXPLAINED • activeTab — identifies the tab you are on when you click the button • tabCapture — the only way Chrome allows a tab's audio level to be changed; the stream is scaled and played straight back • offscreen — a Manifest V3 extension has no page of its own to play audio in, so a hidden document holds the audio processing • storage — remembers your per-site levels on your own device No access to any website is requested in advance, and the extension cannot read page content. GOOD TO KNOW Chrome does not allow extensions to run on its own pages, so chrome:// settings and the Chrome Web Store cannot be controlled. Reloading a tab returns it to normal audio; open the popup again and your saved level is reapplied. Boosting cannot add detail that was never recorded — it makes background hiss louder too, so the lowest setting that does the job always sounds best. A small number of sites use protected media that the browser will not hand over; those tabs keep playing normally. Free, with every feature available from the first click.
