Overview

Learn Japanese from YouTube: clickable subtitles, instant dictionary lookups and a saved vocabulary list.

Learn Japanese from YouTube with the captions it already has. Vidoumo adds the reading over every kanji, the English underneath, and a dictionary behind every word you click. WHAT YOU GET • Furigana over kanji, so you can read the line while you listen. • English under every Japanese line. Where the video has English subtitles, those are used. If not, YouTube's own English translation is used, rebuilt into whole sentences. Only if neither is available does a line go to Google Translate. • Click any word and the video pauses. A card shows the reading, the JLPT level and the meanings. • A JLPT level estimate in front of the video title (for example "JLPT N3–N4"), worked out from the vocabulary, the kanji and how fast people speak. Hover it for the breakdown. It is an estimate, not an official rating. • Save a word with one click. It keeps the sentence it came from and a link back to that moment in the video. • Export your saved words as a CSV file. • Furigana and translation each switch off from the toolbar popup, so the same video works for a beginner and for someone who only wants the dictionary now and then. HOW IT WORKS Vidoumo reads the Japanese captions YouTube already has, manual or automatic, and draws them in a box over the video. Japanese has no spaces, so the words are found by kuromoji, a tokenizer that is bundled with the extension and runs in your browser. Dictionary entries come from Jisho.org. The level estimate is worked out in your browser from the captions and bundled word and kanji lists, so nothing extra is sent anywhere. PRIVACY There are no accounts, no analytics and no servers of ours. Your saved words and settings stay in your browser. Two outside services are used: Jisho receives the word you click, and Google Translate receives a caption line only when the video has no English subtitles and YouTube cannot translate it. Turn Translation off and no caption text goes to Google. Full policy: https://mrfrisby.com/vidoumo/privacy Vidoumo works on youtube.com. It is not made by, or affiliated with, YouTube, Google or Jisho. Dictionary data: Jisho.org and JMdict (© Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, CC BY-SA 4.0). Tokenizer: kuromoji with IPADIC. JLPT word and kanji levels: lists by Jonathan Waller (tanos.co.uk), via stephenmk/yomitan-jlpt-vocab and kanji-data (CC BY-SA 4.0). The JLPT publishes no official lists, so levels are estimates.
