Overview
Side panel to manage Vhumo categories and bookmarks directly from the browser.
## Vhumo – Bookmark Sidebar: your bookmarks, always just a click away Vhumo – Bookmark Sidebar is the official Chrome extension that brings your personal cloud-based bookmark collection directly into your browser’s sidebar. No more keeping tabs open just to save a link, and no more bookmarks scattered across different browsers or devices—with an always-accessible panel, you can save, organize, and retrieve any webpage in seconds, without ever interrupting your browsing. All your bookmarks remain accessible and perfectly synced, wherever you are and regardless of the device, browser, extension, or mobile app you’re using. This is more than just a simple "link saver." It is the official extension for Vhumo (https://vhumo.com)—a cloud service designed to help you collect, categorize, and easily find the links that matter most to you, organized by categories and tags. By installing it, your personal collection becomes an integrated part of your daily browsing experience, available on any page you visit. ## Why install this extension? - Save as you browse, without any interruptions. The sidebar opens right next to the page you’re viewing, allowing you to see both the content and your collection simultaneously—no need to switch tabs. - A single hub for all your links. The categories and bookmarks you create in the Vhumo web app are synced and mirrored in the extension, ensuring everything is always up to date. - Automatic organization. Page titles and favicons are retrieved automatically—there’s no need to copy anything manually; just confirm and save. - Instant search. Filter through your categories and bookmarks as you type, directly from the sidebar—even if you have hundreds of saved links. - Color-coded tags and groups. Assign tags to your categories to group them together and identify them at a glance. The colors and icons remain consistent with your web app. - Works even on smaller screens. The side panel is designed to take up minimal space—it stays open while you work, read, or conduct research. - Total control. You can disconnect or change your token at any time; the token can be revoked from your personal account area. ## What the extension does (key features) The extension opens a side panel where you can access the structure of your Vhumo content: 1. Secure authentication via token. Upon first launch, connect the extension by pasting the API token generated in Vhumo under Profile › Extensions. The token is personal—never share your actual login credentials (password). The extension uses only the token, which you can revoke whenever you like. If any issues arise, the panel provides a guided checklist to verify your connection, service accessibility, and token validity. 2. List of categories and bookmarks. The panel displays all your categories and their associated bookmarks in real time. Each category shows its assigned icon and color, along with a counter indicating the number of links it contains. 3. Internal search. A search field allows you to filter by category name or by bookmark title/URL; matching terms are highlighted so you can find them instantly. 4. Create new categories from the panel. You can create a new folder directly from the sidebar—choose a name, an icon (using the icon selector and search tool), and a color. You can also assign an existing tag or create a new one on the fly. Each category can have its own unique color and label, just as in the web app. 5. Add bookmarks from the current page. When you open the panel while viewing a webpage, the extension automatically detects the URL and retrieves the site's title and favicon. Select the target category, confirm, and the link is saved to your Vhumo account. You can also update the metadata (title/favicon) with a single click before saving. 6. Quick actions for bookmarks. Within each category, you can manage individual links—deleting them (with a confirmation step to prevent accidental removal) or using other core features of your collection. 7. Tag management. The panel supports category tags, offering an easy selection interface (using colored "pills") and the ability to create new tags—assigning them a name and color—ensuring consistency with the web app. 8. Clear connection status. The header displays your Vhumo profile avatar and name, while the footer shows the number of categories and provides options to log out or change your token. ## Who is it for? - Anyone who saves a large number of links (research, articles, tutorials, products, recipes) and wants to keep them organized for quick, easy retrieval. - Professionals who work online and need to collect sources while browsing, without having to leave the page they are currently viewing. - Users who work across multiple devices: since your collection is stored in the Vhumo cloud, the same structure is available wherever you log in. - Existing Vhumo users who want to access their bookmark library natively within their browser. ## Flexible and privacy-conscious The extension communicates exclusively with the Vhumo service (your designated domain) to read and write data and your data via authenticated APIs. Authentication is handled using a dedicated API token, separate from your account password; you can generate, regenerate, or revoke it yourself, and logging out removes the token stored within the extension. No browsing data is collected for advertising purposes—the extension exists solely to help you manage your bookmarks. ## Getting started in 3 steps 1. Register for a Vhumo account. 2. Log in to Vhumo using your username and password, or via an API token (log in via the web, go to Profile › Extensions, and generate/copy your API token). Connect the extension: click the Vhumo icon, paste the token into the setup field, and click "Log in." 3. Start saving. Open the panel on any page, create a category (or select an existing one), and save your first bookmark—the favicon and title will be populated automatically. ## Technical details - Compatibility: Google Chrome (version 114 or higher, for native Side Panel support). - Permissions used: - `sidePanel`: to display your collection in the browser's side panel. - `storage`: to securely store your configuration and token locally on your device. - `tabs` / `activeTab`: to read the URL of the current page when saving a bookmark. - Synchronization: Data is retrieved and updated via the official Vhumo APIs, ensuring that changes made in the panel are immediately reflected in the web app (and vice versa). - Auto-configuration: The extension automatically detects the Vhumo service address, eliminating the need for manual configuration. ## Frequently Asked Questions Do I need a Vhumo account? Yes. The extension acts as a client for the Vhumo service and interacts with your personal content; therefore, it requires a connection via an account token. Is the token secure? Yes. It is a dedicated token—separate from your password—that you can revoke at any time from your personal account area. If the connection fails, the panel will guide you through the verification process step by step. Where do my bookmarks go? They are stored in your Vhumo cloud—the same place where you see them in the web app and the smartphone app—organized by categories and tags. Can I use it across multiple browsers? The extension is available for Chrome and compatible Chromium-based browsers. As part of the Vhumo ecosystem, there is also a smartphone app, and support for Firefox is available. What happens if I uninstall the extension? You won’t lose anything; your bookmarks remain in your Vhumo account and can still be accessed via the web app. You simply will no longer be able to manage them from the browser’s side panel.
