Verity - Media Authenticity Checker
Overview
Multi-signal authenticity verdicts for web media: C2PA provenance, metadata forensics, and more.
Don't ask "is it fake?" Ask what we can verify. Most online misinformation is not an AI deepfake — it is genuine media shared with misleading context, altered dates, or recycled captions. Verity inspects what cryptographic and forensic evidence actually exists about an image or video directly in your browser. Instead of binary "real vs fake" labels, Verity presents transparent, evidence-backed verdicts with full reasoning. TRANSPARENT VERDICTS • VERIFIED: A valid C2PA cryptographic signature confirms the creator, capture device, and unbroken chain of custody. • SUSPICIOUS: Contradictory evidence detected (e.g., prior sightings with different captions, recycled historical footage, or known fact-check debunks). • UNVERIFIED: Baseline state for general web media. No cryptographic manifest was attached. (Unverified means provenance could not be confirmed — never that the content is false). MULTI-SIGNAL FORENSIC ENGINE • C2PA Content Credentials: Validates X.509 cryptographic signatures, trust anchors (DigiCert, Adobe, Truepic), and tamper-evident manifests. • Camera & Hardware Forensics: Inspects hardware EXIF assertions, camera firmware signatures, and in-camera cryptographic coprocessor claims. • Perceptual Hash (pHash) Matching: Detects near-duplicates and re-compressed media against the public Verity verdict ledger using BK-trees. • ClaimReview Fact-Check Integration: Cross-references media against verified claims from independent fact-checkers (Reuters, AFP, AP). • Optional Reverse Image Search: Opt-in reverse search (Google Lens) to locate earliest sightings on the open web. • Optional Local OCR: Extracts text from infographics and memes for claim matching directly on your device. PRIVACY BY DESIGN • Analysis runs locally inside a sandboxed browser offscreen environment. • Only cryptographic hashes (SHA-256 and perceptual hash) are checked against the registry — your actual media bytes are never uploaded. • Zero telemetry, zero tracking, zero personal data collected, and no account required. • Reverse-search and cloud APIs are strictly opt-in and disabled by default. HOW TO USE 1. Right-click any image on any webpage and select "Verify with Verity". 2. Click the Verity icon in your browser toolbar to scan the current tab or adjust settings. 3. Review the transparent evidence breakdown: cryptographic signer, hardware metadata, and prior sighting history. WHY VERITY? Epistemic security for journalists, researchers, investigators, and everyday readers who want truth without black-box AI censorship. PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED • "contextMenus": Adds "Verify with Verity" to your right-click menu for one-click verification. • "storage": Stores your local verification history and optional feature preferences on your machine. • "offscreen": Runs C2PA cryptographic parsing and perceptual hashing in an offscreen sandboxed WebAssembly worker. • "scripting": Injects verdict highlights only when you explicitly invoke verification. • "host_permissions (<all_urls>)": Allows reading the selected image data on any website you choose to verify.
