VeriText: AI Detector and Proof You Wrote It

Marks passages that read like AI-generated text as you browse. Runs entirely on your device, and nothing is ever uploaded.

VeriText marks passages on the pages you read that carry the writing patterns of AI-generated text, a quiet dotted rule under the text and a small mark in the margin. Click the mark to see the score and, more importantly, which signals produced it. SHOW HOW YOU WROTE IT Being wrongly accused is now the bigger problem. Press Alt+Shift+R before you start writing and VeriText records the process on your device: how long the field was open, when text arrived, how much was typed rather than pasted. Export it as a report if anyone ever questions your work. It records timings and sizes, never the characters you type, and refuses password fields outright. Nothing is uploaded, so unlike every other tool that does this, there is no account and no server holding your drafts. The report says plainly what it cannot do: it does not prove who wrote the text. It is one piece of evidence beside your drafts, notes and version history, and it is strongest when it agrees with them. CHECK YOUR OWN WRITING TOO Put the cursor in whatever you are drafting, a comment box, a webmail composer, a CMS editor, and press Alt+Shift+X or use the right-click menu. VeriText reads that one field, at that moment, because you asked it to. Nothing is uploaded, which is the difference between this and every tool that asks you to paste your draft into a website. Automatic scanning never touches a text box. It only reads a field you point at. WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES VeriText measures fifteen features of a passage: how much sentence length varies, how uniform the paragraphs are, how heavily the text leans on hedging and connectives, how often it reaches for vocabulary that language models overuse, whether it repeats sentence openings, whether it falls into three-item lists and set constructions like "not only X, but also Y", and, on the other side, how much first-person, concrete detail, informality and ordinary human untidiness it carries. Those fifteen measurements are weighed against a baseline for the language the passage is written in, and the result is a score. Every one of them is shown to you. There is no black box and no number you are asked to take on faith. WHAT WE MEASURE ABOUT OURSELVES Every build scores seven pieces of human writing chosen because they look like model writing to a detector: a rental contract, an academic abstract, English written by a non-native speaker, marketing copy, an interview transcript, a how-to, and a model draft that a person rewrote. None of them is marked. The highest any of them reaches is 57 per cent, against a threshold of 72. Seven passages do not prove an accuracy figure and we do not claim one. The point is that the number published here is a false positive rate on named text you can read, rather than an accuracy percentage nobody can check. If any of those cases ever crosses the threshold, the build fails. WHAT IT CANNOT DO It cannot tell you who wrote something. It compares writing style against a baseline, and style is not authorship. Careful editing, translation, press releases, legal and academic prose, and writing in a second language all produce these same patterns. Text a person revised after a model drafted it is the case every detector gets wrong, including this one. Never use a mark as grounds for an accusation, a grade or a penalty. VeriText is a prompt to read more closely, not evidence. The extension is built around this. It ships tuned to say nothing rather than say something wrong, the caution sits in the panel where you cannot miss it, and the sensitivity slider tells you in plain words what you are trading away when you turn it up. PRIVACY Everything runs inside your browser. VeriText makes no network requests, has no server, no account and no analytics. There is no model to download. The page text never leaves your device, because nothing leaves your device. It installs asking for nothing. Press the toolbar button or Alt+Shift+V, or select any text and right-click, and VeriText reads the page you are on. That is the whole default experience. No host permissions, no access to your browsing. If you would rather it marked pages automatically as you browse, there is a switch in the settings, and only then does your browser ask you to grant access to all sites. You can turn it off again at any time and the access goes with it. The one standing permission is storage, to remember your settings. It runs in the top frame only. HOW IT WORKS ON A PAGE Nothing is inserted into the page's DOM. Marking uses the CSS Custom Highlight API, which paints ranges without wrapping text nodes, so editors, web apps and copy-paste keep working exactly as they did, and turning VeriText off leaves no trace. Only what is on screen gets analysed. Work is queued as content approaches the viewport and runs during idle time, yielding whenever the browser needs the thread. EIGHT LANGUAGES English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Japanese. Each has its own lexicons and its own baseline, written natively rather than translated: the tells of a model writing German are not the tells of one writing Spanish. VeriText detects the language of a passage and declines to score anything it cannot identify.
