Overview

See how much of a page's raw HTML fits within the 2 MB a search crawler reads, and what falls after the cutoff.

Googlebot reads only the first 2 MB of a page's HTML. Everything after that is never seen: links, headings, product lists, structured data. Modern JavaScript frameworks make this easy to hit, because they put large data payloads into the HTML. Vercite Crawl Cutoff shows you, in one click, whether a page fits and what falls after the cutoff. WHAT IT SHOWS • Raw HTML size against the 2 MB limit, and how much of the page is never read • The exact point where reading stops, with the HTML around it and the element the cut lands in • Internal links, main content and visible text after the cutoff • Element checks with position and status: title, meta description, meta robots, canonical, hreflang, end of head, main content, visible text, H1–H4, JSON-LD, internal and external links, pagination, footer and end of HTML • What's taking up the space: framework data (Next.js, Nuxt, Apollo, Remix, SvelteKit, initial state), inline scripts, CSS, SVG, data URIs and markup, plus the five largest single elements • A size badge on the toolbar icon: green, amber or red HOW IT MEASURES It downloads the page again, exactly as the server sends it, and counts the uncompressed bytes. It never measures the live page, which JavaScript has already changed. Byte positions are exact, also for pages that aren't UTF-8. MOBILE FIRST Pages are checked as a phone by default (Android Chrome user-agent and client hints), because search engines index the mobile version. Switch to Desktop, or Compare to see both side by side, with a warning when they differ by more than 5% or when the site serves different HTML per device. CUSTOM RULES PER SITE Add your own checks for a site: a regular expression or plain text, as pass/fail or for reference. Set which element holds the main content. Import and export rules as JSON to share them with your team. COPY REPORT Copy the whole result as Markdown, ready to paste into a ticket for your developers. HONEST ABOUT EDGE CASES Bot challenge pages, error statuses, redirects, meta refresh, JavaScript-only pages, PDFs (64 MB limit), empty responses and timeouts are all called out in plain language, instead of showing misleading numbers. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • The only network request is the download of the page you clicked on • No analytics, no tracking, no account, nothing sent anywhere • Your settings and rules are stored in your Chrome profile • Fetches without your cookies by default (logged-out view); turn cookies on if you need the logged-in page PERMISSIONS • activeTab: to read the address of the tab you click the icon on • declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess: to send the phone user-agent on the extension's own request only; your normal browsing is never changed • storage: to save your settings and custom rules • Access to sites is optional and asked for only when you want the mobile check, per site or for all sites Made by Vercite (vercite.io) for SEO specialists and developers.
