Overview

Chat with other people who are on the same page as you, right now.

Every page on the web has people reading it right now. You just can't see them. URLChat gives every page a chat room. Open a page, and the toolbar icon shows how many other people are there. Click it, and you can talk to them. Read a news article and argue about it with the other people reading it. Get stuck on a documentation page and ask the person who got stuck on it thirty seconds ago. Watch a live blog with everyone else refreshing the same URL. When you close the tab, you're gone. Nothing is saved. HOW IT WORKS • The toolbar badge shows how many other people are on the page you're viewing. • If a page is quiet, URLChat falls back to showing everyone on the site, so there's usually someone to talk to. • Click the icon to open the chat. You're given a nickname automatically. • Messages are relayed live to everyone else on that page. NO ACCOUNTS, NO SIGN-UP, NO PROFILE There is nothing to create and nothing to log into. No email address, no password, no username to pick. Install it and it works. You get a random nickname in each room — "fluent-quoll-95", "earnest-zebu-17". It stays the same for the length of a conversation, so people can follow who said what, and it is different in every room, so nobody can follow you from one page to the next. THE PAGES YOU VISIT ARE NOT SENT TO US This is the part most "social browsing" extensions get wrong. URLChat never transmits the addresses of pages you visit. Your browser converts each address into an anonymous identifier before anything leaves your machine, and only that identifier is sent. It cannot be turned back into a web address. There are no cookies, no analytics, no advertising, no trackers, and no third-party services of any kind. Nothing about you is sold or shared, because nothing about you is collected. URLChat also refuses to open a chat room at all on pages that are obviously private: your email, your bank, checkout pages, login pages, settings pages, and anything on a local or private network. On those pages the extension stays silent and sends nothing. NOTHING IS STORED There is no database. Conversations live in memory and are destroyed the moment the last person leaves the page. A room keeps only the last 50 messages, so that someone joining mid-conversation can see the context, and those disappear too. You cannot read yesterday's conversation, and neither can we. WHAT YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Connections are encrypted in transit (using WSS, WebSockets over SSL/TLS), but our server processes message text in order to deliver it and to make moderation possible. However, you should never send anything private or sensitive through URLChat. And while the specific page you're on stays private, our server can tell which website you're on, the "everyone on this site" feature needs a shared identifier per domain, and domain names are guessable. Full details: https://pdwc2026.com/privacy.html PERMISSIONS • Tabs: to read the address of open tabs so it can work out which room they belong to, and to show the count on the toolbar icon. Addresses are converted to anonymous identifiers in your browser and never sent. • Storage: to remember one random identifier used to generate your nicknames. • Alarms: to reconnect if the browser suspends the extension. URLChat has no access to page content. It contains no content scripts and cannot read, alter, or see anything on the pages you visit.
