Overview

Flags institutional euphemisms that abstract physical harm, in plain language anchored in international law.

unmask.shield reads what institutions actually mean. Corporate, government, and military language often abstracts real physical harm behind neutral-sounding terms — "collateral effects" instead of civilian deaths, "biodiversity offsetting" instead of habitat destruction, "kinetic operations" instead of military strikes. unmask.shield flags this language wherever you read or write it, and shows a plain-language translation anchored to a specific legal reference: the Rome Statute, the Geneva Conventions, the UDHR, or the Planetary Boundaries framework. Works wherever you already read and write online, including email, chat, and messaging platforms, plus a manual scan mode for cloud document editors and PDFs. Detection runs locally against a built-in phrase library; nothing about your reading or writing is transmitted unless you explicitly opt into AI-assisted detection. Free to start. The Personal tier includes static phrase detection across every supported platform, no account required beyond a free key. For teams and organisations. Paid tiers add AI-assisted detection for phrases the built-in library doesn't catch, a shared company phrase repository so your organisation's own euphemisms get flagged too, API access, and MDM deployment (Chrome Enterprise, Intune, Jamf) so IT can push a key to every employee without manual setup. Built on open data. Every phrase detected across all users feeds an open, publicly browsable dataset at unmask.tools, tracking how institutional language shifts over time — see the Global Report link in the extension itself.
