Universal Web Accessibility Companion
Overview
Reading support for webpages: adjust text and colors, use a focus ruler, and read aloud with installed on-device voices.
Universal Web Accessibility Companion helps students adjust assigned webpage reading to their needs. It changes the presentation of supported webpages in Chrome and leaves the original site data unchanged. It is reading support, not a screen reader or a promise that every website can be adapted. Features Choose easier letters, bigger text, one-line reading focus, or no changes. Adjust text size, font, spacing, measure, alignment, tint, and colors. Follow a reading ruler with the pointer, keyboard, or read-aloud position. Read supported webpage text aloud with installed on-device voices and sentence and word highlighting. Keep global preferences, set site-specific preferences, and use Restore this site when a page needs its original presentation. Privacy summary The extension processes readable website content transiently in browser memory for adaptation and read-aloud. When a user explicitly creates a site-specific preference or chooses Restore this site, Chrome storage keeps the site's hostname and preference; up to 200 hostnames are retained. A stored mode name such as dyslexia can reveal a health or accessibility inference. Chrome may keep preferences locally or sync them under the user's Chrome account controls. UWAC has no backend access to this data and the extension does not send it to UWAC or third parties. Limitations Support is for readable webpage content. Chrome's built-in PDF viewer and other closed document viewers, browser pages, canvas-based editors, document editors, images of text, and blocked frames cannot be adapted. The application chrome safeguard preserves controls, icons, canvas, SVG artwork, and code editors; use Restore this site when a compatibility safeguard limits an adaptation. Onboarding and reading mode Open the official public review page. Open Universal Web Accessibility Companion from Chrome's side panel. On first use, review the privacy, unsupported-surface, Restore, and keyboard-shortcut guidance, then choose Start using Reading Companion. Choose Bigger text or Easier letters and confirm readable page text changes while page controls remain usable. Advanced controls, ruler, and read-aloud Choose Advanced, change a text or color control, then return to the main view. In Advanced, enable a reading ruler and confirm pointer or keyboard tracking on the public review page. Start read-aloud and confirm sentence and word highlighting advances with an installed on-device voice. If the test device has no installed local voice, confirm read-aloud stays unavailable and shows system voice-installation guidance; the extension must not select a remote voice.
