A $9.99-a-week subscription app still shows up as a free download. The wall shows up three screens in, after you have already spent ten minutes on it. The ungatedapps extension tells you the truth, before you click. WHAT YOU SEE A small tag on search results: • Ungated — nothing to pay, ever • Free, with ads — free, funded by advertising • One-time unlock — a free tier plus an optional one-off purchase, never recurring • Unverified — we have not confirmed this one yet • Subscription — core features need a recurring payment • Trial, then pay — free briefly, then it charges you • Paid upfront — costs money before you can open it Plus a second tag when something wants your email or an account before it will do the job. Being harvested and then walled is its own kind of annoying, so it gets its own label. WHERE THE VERDICTS COME FROM In-app purchase listings and what real users report in recent reviews. Never the developer's own marketing copy. Where the evidence does not settle it, the app is marked Unverified rather than guessed at. NO ACCOUNT, NO PROFILE There is nothing to sign into. To look up a verdict, the extension sends us the domain names of the results listed on a search page, or the app ID from a store listing you are viewing. That is the whole mechanism and the only thing it sends. Not your history, not the page, not what you type. There are no accounts, so nothing is tied to an identity. HELPING OUT IS OPTIONAL We are building a database of every walled app and website, so nobody ever has to fight their way through one again. Most paywalls cannot be seen from outside of the wall which is why the list needs people who actually hit them. If you choose to turn it on, the extension can notice when a site walls you and report that one domain plus what stopped you. Every wall someone hits is one the next person gets warned about. It is off by default, the main feature works without it, and you can switch it off any time.
