Ukiyoe: Japanese Dictionary & Flashcards

Japanese popup dictionary. Hold Shift and hover a word for its reading, pitch accent and meaning, then save it to a flashcard deck.

A Japanese dictionary that lives on the page you are reading. Hold Shift and hover a word, and a small card shows the dictionary form, the reading with its pitch accent, and the meaning. Press S to keep the word as a flashcard in a deck of your own, together with the sentence you found it in. Made for anyone learning Japanese who wants to read real websites, news and blogs without leaving the page. How it works - Hold Shift and point at a word. Release Shift or press Esc to close the card. - The card explains conjugations, for example 食べてた ← 食べる (te-form + past). - Click the card or press Enter to pin it. A pinned card adds an example sentence, the kanji in the word and every meaning. - Press S to save the word or K to mark it as known. Press 1 to 9 first to choose which meaning to save. - Press D to pick a deck, or make a new one right there: for a trip, a book, a class or a show you are watching. The words you find stay apart from the course. - Right-click a selection for "Look up … in Ukiyoe". Press Alt+Shift+U on a site you read every day to look up by hovering alone, with no key to hold. Made for learners - Every deck becomes a set of flashcards in Ukiyoe Japanese, on the web, iOS and Android, with the sentence and the site you were reading. Flip through one set, mix everything you saved, or add words to spaced-repetition review when you are ready. - About 8,500 words from the JLPT N5 to N1 course show the course meaning first, with an example sentence and native audio. Other words come from JMdict. - Pitch accent is drawn as a line over every reading, the way textbooks in Japan mark it. - A Kanji tab shows each character in the word, with its readings, meaning, stroke count and parts. Stays out of the way - Nothing happens until you hold Shift. The extension does not scan or highlight the pages you read. - The word list downloads once in the background (about 14 MB) and then works offline. Furigana on sites like NHK News Web Easy is read correctly. - Looking up a word happens on your computer. A word is sent to your account only when you save it.
