Overview
Bilingual web page translator: the translation sits under each paragraph and is made on your computer. No account.
You read Spanish news to learn the language, and when you translate web pages you want the English under each paragraph, not the whole page swapped for it. Twinread puts the translation in italics under every paragraph, so the original stays where it was. The browser's own translator does the work on your computer, with no account, no API key and no limit on pages. HOW A READING GOES 1. Open an article, pick the two languages and press Alt+A. The page reads paragraph by paragraph, the visible ones first. 2. Select a phrase you want to learn. A small card translates it; press Keep and the phrase is saved with the sentence it came from. 3. Open Kept phrases to see every phrase with its sentence and its translation, search them, and export them for Anki (Pro). Use it to read news in a language you are learning, follow a foreign-language site, or check one confusing sentence without translating the whole page. WHAT YOU GET • Bilingual view (translation under the original) or translation only. Switch at any time without translating again, and go back to the untouched page with one click • Visible paragraphs are translated first, and text that loads as you scroll is picked up • Four looks for the translation: subtle, underline, highlight, or dim the original • Bilingual video subtitles: the original caption line with its translation under it, over the video. It works where the site provides captions, in plain HTML5 video and on YouTube (switch captions on with the CC button), and it follows the video into fullscreen. Text size is yours to set • PDF reader: choose a PDF or drop it on the reader page, and read it page by page with each paragraph and its translation side by side (stacked on a narrow window). Two-column pages are read left column first, running headers, footers and page numbers are left out, and a paragraph is translated when you scroll to it. Save the result as a bilingual HTML page. It works on PDFs that contain text; a PDF that is only pictures of text has nothing for Twinread to read • Select text for a small card with the translation and a copy button. Hold Alt over a paragraph to translate only that paragraph • Code, forms, editable areas, hidden text and one-word menu labels are left alone. Text already in your language is skipped. Links in the original stay clickable • Keep a word or phrase with the sentence it came from, then search, edit and delete your kept phrases on their own page, and keep a backup file of your kept phrases, glossary and settings • Language pair with a swap button. The page language is detected for you, and you can set it by hand ON YOUR DEVICE Your browser translates the text on your computer. Twinread has no translation server, and the text you read is never sent anywhere. Three things leave your browser. Your licence key goes out when a Pro pass is activated or re-checked. A suggestion you write yourself, and an email address if you add one, are sent only when you press Send. And Twinread keeps a bare tally of four moments, your first translated page, a free limit, the Pro offer and checkout opening: the product name and the moment, once a day at most, nothing that identifies you. Options has a switch to turn it off. A PDF you choose is read and translated on your computer. When you open one from a tab, the reader page asks the site for that same file once, after your click. At install Twinread has no access to any website; Always translate asks for one site at a time, only when you switch it on. FREE LIMITS AND WHAT PRO REMOVES Free translates any page, selection and paragraph, in both views, with no limit on pages or length, on as many always-translate sites as you like. It keeps up to 100 kept phrases, uses 3 glossary entries, translates 10 minutes of video subtitles a day and reads the first 5 pages of any PDF. Pro removes those caps and adds whole PDFs in the reader, bilingual copies of a PDF, unlimited video subtitles, translating what you type, the full glossary that keeps or changes chosen terms, custom styles, flashcard review of your kept phrases, bilingual copies of an article as HTML or Markdown, and marking of kept phrases on every page with export to Anki or CSV. Your first translation starts a free 7-day Pro trial; no card is taken. After the trial, Pro is sold on Payhip: €5 for a month, €39 for a year or €69 for good. A licence key activates up to 3 browsers. HELP US SHAPE IT Tell us what would make Twinread better for the way you read: https://twinread.pages.dev/roadmap QUESTIONS Which browsers work? Google Chrome 138 or later or Microsoft Edge 148 or later, on desktop. On first use the browser fetches its translation engine, which takes about 20 seconds. Is it really offline? The browser downloads a small language model once for each language pair you use. After that, translation works without a connection. Does it translate video subtitles? Yes, where the site provides captions: Twinread reads the caption line the video shows and puts the translation under it, using the browser's on-device translator like everything else. Turn captions on in the player first (on YouTube, the CC button). A video with no captions has nothing to translate, and Twinread does not listen to audio. Free covers 10 minutes of playing time a day. Does it translate PDFs? Yes, PDFs that contain text. Open the PDF reader from the popup, choose a file or drop it on the page, and each paragraph appears with its translation beside it. On a tab that shows a PDF, the popup has a Read this PDF in Twinread button; if the browser does not let Twinread download that file, save it and drop it on the reader. Free reads the first 5 pages of any PDF, Pro reads the whole document and saves it as a bilingual HTML page. A PDF that is only pictures of text has no text for Twinread to read. Why does it sometimes ask for a click? The browser lets a page use its language model only after a click, once per website. The toolbar button, the shortcuts and text selection take care of that; on a site set to translate automatically, the first visit shows a Start translating button. Why does a page not translate? Pages served over plain http cannot be translated, because the built-in translator is only enabled on https pages. Twinread is an independent product and is not affiliated with Google.
