Overview

Clamps HDR images and video to the standard range so glaring, extra-bright posts render like everything else.

ome images are engineered to glare. They carry HDR encoding that addresses absolute luminance, so a "white" logo asks your display for several times the brightness of the page around it — and on an HDR screen it gets it. The post flashes at you while everything else sits at normal white. Turn It Down clamps that content back to the standard range. Bright HDR assets tone-map down to SDR white; ordinary images are untouched. • It runs on the feeds and boards where HDR uploads are more common: settings has a switch to cover the rest of the web, off unless you ask for it. • Click the toolbar button to turn clamping off for the site you are on, and again to turn it back on. Alt+Shift+H does the same from the keyboard. • Choose Standard, which allows no headroom above SDR white, or Constrained, which keeps a little — better on photography sites. • Exempt video, so genuine HDR film keeps its full range. • Changes apply to open tabs immediately. No reload. Nothing leaves your machine: no network requests, no analytics, no remote code. Requires Chrome 135 or later, which is where the underlying CSS property landed.
