Try First, Think Before You Ask AI
Overview
Intercepts AI prompts, classifies them with Claude, and nudges you to think first on reasoning tasks.
Try First is a browser extension that helps you use AI tools without losing the ability to think for yourself. When you send a prompt to an AI chat tool, Try First quietly checks whether it's the kind of question you should try to solve yourself first, like a coding problem, a proof, or homework, versus a simple factual lookup. If it's worth struggling with, you'll get a quick prompt to try it yourself before the AI answers. If it's a simple lookup, nothing gets in your way. Try First works across the most popular AI chat platforms. Why this matters: leaning on AI for every reasoning task quietly erodes the skill you're trying to build. Try First doesn't block you from using AI, it just makes sure you're making that choice on purpose instead of by default. What it tracks (all stored locally on your device): Your daily "thinking" streak A log of what you tried yourself vs. what you looked up Optional notes on your own reasoning before the AI weighs in Try First includes a free daily allowance of classifications. If you use it heavily, you can add your own Anthropic API key in settings for unlimited use. Your prompts are only ever used to classify them, they're never stored on our servers.
