TranWords - Free Translate
Overview
Open-source bilingual webpage translation: bind any LLM with your own API key, or any translation site. Free, secure, customizable.
TranWords is a free bilingual webpage translation extension. There is no membership, no quota wall and no upgrade prompt — you decide which translation service to use: plug in your own API key, or add any translation website. ONE PURPOSE: TRANSLATE THE PAGES YOU READ Full-page bilingual translation: translations are inserted paragraph by paragraph below the original text, so nothing is replaced. Switch to translation-only mode whenever you want. Selection translation: select text and click the small floating icon, or set it to translate the moment you select. Results stream in and can be copied with one click. Hover translation: hold a key and move the mouse over a paragraph to see its translation in place, without leaving the reading flow. Input box translation: press the trigger key three times inside an input box to translate what you have typed — replace the original, or keep both. Floating button: a draggable ball in the bottom-right corner translates the whole page in one click, and hides itself when the page is already in your target language. Site rules: choose which sites translate automatically on load, and which are never translated. Never-translate marks: mark words or regions that should stay as they are. They are skipped when translating, and restored immediately if they were already translated. Keyboard shortcuts and a right-click menu: translate or restore the current page, switch between bilingual and translation-only, translate the selected text, translate the current input box. LOOK AND FEEL Seven translation styles: plain, underline, dashed, highlight, faded, blur (study mode) and quote block. Translation font size is adjustable, and the interface language can be switched (简体中文 / 繁體中文 / English). CHOOSE YOUR OWN TRANSLATION SERVICE Nine providers are built in — supply your own API key. If you would rather not configure a key, add a free public translation endpoint are recognised automatically from the address you paste. Name, address and token are all editable, and every entry can be edited or removed at any time. Any OpenAI-compatible gateway you run yourself can be added the same way. Prompts and temperature are configurable, so you can tune the wording to your own glossary; batching and concurrency are adjustable as well. WHY THE EXTENSION ASKS TO "READ AND CHANGE YOUR DATA ON ALL WEBSITES" This is a page translation tool, so its entry points have to be available on any page you read. Content scripts therefore run on http/https pages — the floating button, selection translation, hover translation and input-box translation all happen before you take any action, and the "always translate this site" rule translates a page on load. None of that can be replaced by a permission that is granted only for the moment you click the toolbar icon. Every translation request is also made from the extension's background service worker (web page scripts cannot call those APIs directly because of the browser's same-origin policy), and the target is whichever service you select in the settings — an address that is only known at runtime and cannot be written down as a fixed list of domains in advance. Apart from translating, the extension contacts no other hosts and requests no permissions unrelated to translation. PRIVACY Your text is sent directly from your browser to the translation service you configured, and only when you start a translation — it never passes through a server operated by the developer. API keys are stored encrypted on your own device: never uploaded, never displayed and impossible to copy out. There is no analytics, no browsing history is recorded, and no data is sold or transferred. BEFORE YOU INSTALL · The extension translates; it does not provide translation capacity by itself. You need an API key from a translation service, or a free public endpoint. The extension is free; API usage is billed by the provider you choose, based on your own usage. · Free public endpoints are the interfaces the translation websites themselves use, not official vendor APIs. They may be rate-limited, and they may stop working when a site changes — which is why their addresses are editable in the settings. · Page text is what this extension translates. PDF, EPUB, video subtitles and image OCR are not supported. · Browser-internal pages such as chrome:// pages cannot be translated. That is a browser restriction. WHO IT IS FOR Reading English documentation, papers, GitHub issues and code comments, forums and news when you want the original and the translation side by side — or when you need to study the original but want a quick pass over the translation first. FEEDBACK If a translation looks wrong or a site does not work well, the feedback route is listed on the extension's Settings → About page. Including the page URL, the service and model you were using, and a screenshot makes the problem much faster to locate.
