Track Your Time

Start, stop and see your Track Your Time timer from the toolbar.

Track Your Time records the hours you bill. This extension puts the timer in the Chrome toolbar, so you start and stop it without opening a tab. WHAT THE POPUP DOES • Start a timer and stop it. The toolbar icon shows how long it has run. • Continue an earlier entry from the quick-start list, or pin a job you do often. • Log time you forgot to track. Edit or delete any entry. • Step back through earlier days. An entry has a description, a project, a task, tags and a billable flag. Projects are grouped by client. If a project, task or tag does not exist yet, create it in the popup. The popup selects it for you. DESCRIPTIONS THAT COMPLETE Type the first letters, and the popup suggests descriptions you used before. The search runs on the server, so an entry from six months ago still appears. Tab takes a suggestion. Enter still starts the timer. ⌘ Enter also fills in the project, task, tags and billable flag. SUGGESTIONS FOR TIME YOU FORGOT Turn on activity capture in the settings, and the extension notes which site you have in front of you. For time with no entry, it then suggests one. Accept it, edit it first, or dismiss it. A rule files a site under the same project every time. The activity stays on this computer. Only a suggestion you accept reaches the server, as an entry. Capture is off until you turn it on. It keeps the site name only, unless you also switch on page titles. It deletes activity after 14 days, or after the period you set. It never records incognito tabs or the sites on your exclusion list. SIGN IN ONCE If you are signed in to the Track Your Time web app, the extension uses that session. You never paste an API key. The popup also has its own sign-in form. If your account uses two-factor authentication, sign in to the web app first. The popup's form cannot ask for the second factor. IT WORKS OFFLINE Start and stop timers with no connection. The extension keeps the changes on this computer and sends them in order when you reconnect. When you sign out, the extension deletes changes it has not sent. The next person on this computer cannot send your hours to their account. IT STAYS IN SYNC The popup keeps a live connection to the server. Stop a timer in the web app or on another device, and the popup shows it at once. WITH YOUR TEAM In the web app, you invite colleagues to your workspace by email, as members or admins. Each one sees only their own time until you let them see colleagues' time or money. The popup shows each person only their own entries. If you belong to more than one workspace, the popup lets you pick the one you track into. The web app keeps its own choice. A change made offline goes to the workspace you made it in, even if you switch afterwards. SETTINGS Language (English or German), theme, 12- or 24-hour clock, duration format, idle detection, and a maximum entry length that stops a forgotten timer. These follow you to the web app and your other devices. Week start, currency and the default hourly rate apply to the whole workspace, and only owners and admins can change them. The settings also list every signed-in device, and you can sign any of them out. PERMISSIONS • storage: keeps your session, unsent changes and, if you turn it on, your activity on this computer. • cookies: reads the Track Your Time web app's session cookie, so you sign in once. • idle: tells the extension you walked away, so it can ask what to do with that time. • alarms: updates the running time on the toolbar icon every 30 seconds. • tabs (optional): Chrome asks for it only when you turn on activity capture. It lets the extension see the address and title of the active tab. The extension never reads what is on a page. • api.trackyourtime.dev: the default server. If you pick your own server, Chrome asks you for access to that one address. WHAT STAYS IN THE WEB APP Reports, invoices, the calendar, client management and inviting members. The popup is 380 pixels wide, and a report does not fit. YOUR OWN SERVER The extension from the Chrome Web Store also works with a self-hosted Track Your Time server. On the sign-in screen, choose "My own server" and enter its address. The self-hosting guide shows how to set the server up.
