TraceMind: Local AI & Semantic History Search
Overview
Private, on-device AI for your browser. Semantic search for history, offline page recall, and 100% local data sovereignty.
Find any page you have ever visited, just by describing what you remember. TraceMind is a private, AI-powered search engine for your entire browser history, and it runs completely on your device. Instead of scrolling endlessly through a list of links or trying to recall an exact title or URL, you describe the page in your own words and TraceMind finds it, using the meaning of what you read, not just the keywords you type. It is the browser history search that Chrome never gave you. THE PROBLEM: "I KNOW I READ THAT SOMEWHERE" We have all been there. Last week you read a brilliant article about optimizing performance, or a guide to fixing a bug, or a product you meant to buy. Today it is gone. You open your browsing history, but the page title was something useless like "Home" or "Untitled Document," and the link is buried under a thousand others. Chrome's built-in history only matches the exact words in a title or URL, so if you do not remember the precise phrase, the page is lost forever. On top of that, Chrome quietly forgets most of your history after about 90 days. TraceMind fixes this. It gives your browser a real memory, one that works the way your own memory works: by meaning, context, and ideas. HOW IT WORKS TraceMind reads and understands the actual content of every page you visit, right inside your browser, and builds a private, searchable memory of everything you have read. When you search, it combines two powerful engines and blends their results so the best match rises to the top: - AI semantic search understands the meaning and intent behind your words. Search "cheap data plan for traveling abroad" and it will surface the eSIM page you read, even if the word "eSIM" never crossed your mind. This is real natural language search over your own history. - Full-text keyword search handles exact matches: error codes, function names, product SKUs, people, and unique phrases are never missed. Because it understands concepts, TraceMind finds pages that a normal browser history search would never return. And because everything is processed locally, using WebAssembly and WebGPU acceleration when your hardware supports it, your data never leaves your computer. THE SEARCHES YOU CAN FINALLY DO - "That tutorial about making blurry photos look sharper" finds an upscaling guide. - "The article comparing two ways to merge ranked lists" finds a page on algorithms. - "Mobile data for my trip to Europe" finds a travel SIM comparison. - "The recipe with miso and eggplant I saw last month" finds it by ingredients. - "What was I reading last Tuesday?" scopes your history to a single day. You describe it like you would to a friend. TraceMind does the remembering. EVERYTHING TRACEMIND CAN DO Semantic AI history search Search your browsing history by meaning and concept, powered by a neural network that runs on device. No cloud, no account, no waiting on a server. Full-text keyword search A fast, high-performance text engine indexes the full content of every page, so precise keyword and phrase searches are instant and complete. Search by date and time Jump back to what you read on a specific day. Scope results to Today, Yesterday, or the last week straight from the popup, or pick any custom date range in the full dashboard. Chat with your history (Pro) Ask questions in plain language and get real answers drawn from the pages you have actually read or saved, complete with clickable citations back to the source. This is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) over your personal browsing history. Bring your own API key for OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), or Google Gemini. Your question and the matched snippets go only to the provider you choose, and your key is stored locally and never exported. You can ask across all your history or just your saved pages. Import your existing Chrome history Do not start from an empty memory. Import your past browsing history from Chrome in one click. Imported pages are instantly searchable by title and URL, and gain full semantic search as the on-device AI indexes them in the background. Save and bookmark pages (Free) Explicitly save any page and pull it up instantly from a dedicated Saved view. It works even on pages that were not auto-captured. Saved pages are protected from automatic cleanup, so your bookmarks never expire, no matter your retention window. Offline page viewer (Pro) Save complete, self-contained snapshots of web pages and read them later, fully offline, even if the original site changes, goes down, or disappears. It is like a personal Wayback Machine for the pages that matter to you, rendered safely in a sandbox. Notes, tags, and pinning (Pro) Turn your history into a personal knowledge base. Add notes to any page, organize with tags (with AI-suggested tags), and pin the pages you return to most. A lightweight second brain and personal knowledge management (PKM) system built from what you actually read. Screenshots and visual recall TraceMind remembers what pages looked like, not just what they said. Free users get quick visual previews; Pro users can store high-resolution snapshots up to Ultra HD (1080p) for crisp visual recall. Multilingual search (50+ languages) Switch to the optional multilingual AI model and search across languages. An English search can find a page you read in German, French, Spanish, or dozens of other languages, and the other way around. Perfect for bilingual users, translators, and international researchers. Private analytics (Pro) See trends in your reading and browsing habits with detailed charts, top domains, and drill-down by day, hour, or custom range. Click any point to jump straight back into the matching pages. Export, import, and encrypted backups Back up your entire searchable history to a file and restore it on another machine. Plain-JSON export and import are free for everyone, so your data is always portable and always yours. Pro users can protect backups with their own passphrase using strong encryption. Excluded domains Keep private or sensitive sites (banking, health, internal tools) out of your index entirely. Free users can exclude up to 10 domains; Pro users get unlimited. Clean, distraction-free capture TraceMind uses the same article-extraction technology behind reader modes to strip ads, menus, pop-ups, and sidebars, storing only the meaningful content you actually read. It also understands modern single-page apps (SPAs) like YouTube, GitHub, and Notion, where the page changes without a full reload. PRIVATE BY DESIGN, NOT AS AN AFTERTHOUGHT Your browsing history is some of the most personal data you have. TraceMind treats it that way. - 100% on device. The AI that reads, indexes, and searches your pages runs locally in your browser using WebAssembly and WebGPU. Your history is never uploaded, never sold, and never used to train anyone's models. - No account, no sign-up, no tracking, no ads. There is nothing to log into. - You own your data. Full local storage in your browser, with free export and import so you are never locked in. - Optional strong encryption. Pro users can lock the local database and their backups behind a custom passphrase using AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption with modern key strengthening (PBKDF2, 600,000 iterations, aligned with current OWASP guidance). - Opt-in AI chat only. The single time anything leaves your device is if you deliberately turn on the Chat feature, and even then it goes only to the provider you configured, with your own key. It is off until you switch it on, and it never runs in the background. Great for anyone who cares about privacy, data sovereignty, and keeping their digital life on their own machine. REMEMBERS LONGER THAN YOUR BROWSER Chrome forgets most of your history after roughly 90 days. TraceMind keeps your history searchable for a full 365 days, on every plan, and it stores what pages actually said, so you can find them by their ideas long after you would have lost them. Optionally import your existing Chrome history in a single click. 3. Keep browsing as usual. TraceMind quietly builds your searchable memory in the background. 4. Click the icon anytime and describe the page you are looking for. That is the whole thing. COMMON QUESTIONS Does TraceMind send my history to OpenAI, Google, or anyone else? Not for search. All indexing and searching happen locally, on your machine, and your history never leaves your device. The only exception is the optional Chat feature: when you choose to use it, your question and the matching page snippets go to the AI provider you picked, using your own key. It is opt-in and never runs in the background. Is TraceMind really free? Yes. AI semantic search, keyword search, unlimited page indexing, 365-day history, save and bookmark, and export and import are all free, forever. Pro unlocks chat, offline snapshots, notes and tags, high-resolution screenshots, analytics, and encryption. Will it slow down my browser? No. TraceMind does its heavy lifting on a separate background thread, and only when your computer is idle or a page has finished loading, so your everyday browsing stays fast and smooth. How is this different from Chrome's built-in history? Chrome only matches exact words in a title or URL and forgets most pages after about 90 days. TraceMind understands the meaning of the pages you read, searches their full content, and keeps them for a year, so you can find things by idea, not just by keyword. Do I need an account? No. There is no sign-up and no login. You install it and it works. How do I search? Click the TraceMind icon and type the way you would describe the page to a friend. That is it. Can I get my data out? Always. Export your entire history to a file at any time, free, and import it on another machine. Does TraceMind work offline? Yes. Search runs entirely on your device, so it works with or without an internet connection. Pro users can also save full offline copies of pages and read them later, even if the original site is gone. Can I delete pages or clear my history? Absolutely. Remove any individual page from your results, or clear everything. You are always in control of what TraceMind remembers, and you can exclude sites so they are never captured in the first place. How much storage does it use? TraceMind compresses page content and removes duplicate pages to stay lean, and it includes built-in storage tools and automatic maintenance to keep everything tidy. What AI model powers the search? Semantic search uses a compact, on-device sentence-embedding neural network, with an optional multilingual model for cross-language search. Everything runs locally in your browser, with GPU acceleration when available. Can I search within a single website? Yes. Filter by domain in the full dashboard to focus on one site, sort by relevance, recency, or most visited, and narrow further by date, tag, or saved pages. Does it capture Incognito or private browsing? No. TraceMind respects Incognito and only remembers your normal browsing history. Is this just a bookmark manager or tab manager? It is more than both. It automatically remembers everything you read, so you do not have to bookmark anything, and it lets you find closed tabs and old pages by meaning instead of digging through folders. THE PERMISSIONS, IN PLAIN ENGLISH - History: to sync with your browsing and import your past pages. - Storage and unlimited storage: to keep your searchable index on your own device without running into quota limits. - Tabs and active tab: to tell when a page has finished loading and capture its content and screenshot for search. - Alarms and idle: to run maintenance and indexing quietly while you are away from the keyboard. - Offscreen: to run the local AI model without ever freezing your browser. TraceMind requests only what it needs to build your private, on-device memory, and nothing more. IN SHORT Think of TraceMind as a personal search engine and a digital memory for your browsing: part browser history manager, part bookmarking and note-taking tool, part research assistant and second brain, all running privately on your own device. If you have ever wished for instant page recall, a searchable archive of everything you have read, or a smarter way to find old tabs and websites you can no longer name, this is the extension you have been looking for. Stop losing the things you read. Give your browser the memory it should have had all along. Install TraceMind and never lose a page again.
