Tonglens works on web pages and includes configurable translation providers, personal translation-position rules and Chrome Sync. Install and start 1. Install Tonglens from the Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/nglkdndphmcfbdoikddencgcmcfgijaf 2. On first use, Tonglens uses your browser language as its target. If you manually choose and save a target language (zh-CN, zh-TW, ja, en, etc.), your saved choice takes priority and syncs with your Chrome account to other devices. 3. Tonglens evaluates text paragraph by paragraph and translates pages written in other languages, including Japanese. For short text whose language is uncertain, open the floating 通 button and choose 立即翻译此页 (Translate this page). Built-in rules handle English Amazon product titles separately. 4. Choose 标记需翻译位置 (Mark a position to translate), select an element and confirm to save a personal site rule. Reload other open pages after the rule has synced. Providers and reliability The default third-party Google channel needs no user API key. Its availability and limits are controlled by the provider. Optional OpenAI-compatible providers use your own endpoint, model and API key. Remote endpoints require HTTPS; local loopback services may use HTTP. Version 0.1.4 adds a 12-second limit per Google request and at most one retry for temporary failures. Failed text is recorded as a failure, not an empty translation; successful items in the same batch remain available. The popup shows failure counts. Retry manually after connectivity recovers. No Microsoft fallback is included. Sync and privacy The same Chrome Sync account and extension ID can share non-sensitive settings, site blocklists and saved hostname/selector rules. API keys and translation caches remain on each device. Sync is asynchronous and open pages may need a reload. Translation text is sent directly to the selected provider; the developer does not receive it. Automatic translation is not limited to English: Tonglens evaluates page text paragraph by paragraph and can translate other languages, including Japanese. Short text can be uncertain and may require manual translation; Tonglens does not promise perfect language detection for every language. The main settings screens currently use Chinese labels. The feedback page and quick-start guide support English and Simplified Chinese, with automatic language selection and a manual switch.
