Tomoshi Japanese Dictionary - Popup Lookup

Select Japanese and hold Alt to look it up, release to close (lookups come from the local Tomoshi desktop app).

Select-to-look-up extension for the Tomoshi Japanese dictionary: select Japanese on any web page and hold Alt to see the definition, pitch accent and grammar notes in a small popup, right where you are reading. Release Alt and it is gone. Made for learners who read Japanese news, articles and fiction in the browser. [Requires the Tomoshi app] The extension is only the front end and carries no dictionary of its own. Lookups and audio are both provided by the Tomoshi app running on your computer, so start it first (minimised is fine). The extension works with the Windows and macOS versions of Tomoshi, a free download at tomoshi.app. ChromeOS, Linux and other systems are not supported yet. [Features] • Select-to-look-up: select Japanese text and hold the trigger key (Alt by default; Ctrl or Shift if you prefer) to show the popup, release to close • Definitions and pitch accent: meanings, part-of-speech tags and a pitch-accent curve, with JLPT level and common-word badges on each heading, and grammar entries as a fallback when no word matches. Explanations are shown in the language of the dictionary data installed in the Tomoshi app (English, Simplified or Traditional Chinese) • Audio: click the speaker icon in the popup to hear the word. Speech is synthesised in the cloud through the Tomoshi app (free for now, with a daily quota; it may become paid to balance costs if the user base grows beyond what I can cover, with advance notice in the app) • Grouped results: the popup groups results as common words, grammar and uncommon words, with a category bar at the bottom to jump between them; grammar cards list each sense and connection pattern on its own line • Conjugated forms explained: for an inflected form such as 食べさせられた, the popup shows its dictionary form and how it was conjugated • Toolbar popup: click the extension icon to keep searching, with the current selection filled in; you can also type in romaji • Wordbook and history: saved to the Tomoshi app on your own computer, and you can choose which wordbook a starred word goes into (history for browser lookups is off by default and can be turned on in the extension's settings) • Interface language: English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese, following the browser by default • Site blocklist: turn look-up off on sites you choose • Settings apply immediately and sync through your browser account Conjugation explanations, choosing a wordbook and romaji input need the latest Tomoshi app (version 1.1.2). With an older version, these fall back to the previous behaviour. [Privacy] The extension talks only to the Tomoshi app on your own computer (127.0.0.1), never to a remote server. Selected text is sent only to the app on your computer; the extension itself collects and uploads nothing. [Known limitation] Pages rendered on a canvas, such as Google Docs, do not expose selectable text, so look-up does not work there yet. Copy the text and use the Tomoshi app's global shortcut instead.
