Tomoshi Japanese Dictionary - Popup Lookup

Select-to-look-up extension for the Tomoshi Japanese dictionary: select Japanese on any web page and hold Alt to see the definition, pitch accent and grammar notes in a small popup, right where you are reading. Release Alt and it is gone. Made for learners who read Japanese news, articles and fiction in the browser. [Requires the desktop app] The extension is only the front end and carries no dictionary of its own. Lookups and audio both come from the Tomoshi desktop app running on your machine, so start it first (minimised is fine). The desktop app is currently available for Windows and macOS only (free download at tomoshi.app); ChromeOS, Linux and other systems are not supported yet. [Features] • Select-to-look-up: select Japanese text and hold the trigger key (Alt by default; Ctrl or Shift if you prefer) to show the popup, release to close • Definitions and pitch accent: meanings, part-of-speech tags and a pitch-accent curve, with grammar entries as a fallback when no word matches. Explanations are shown in the language of the dictionary data installed in the desktop app (English, Simplified or Traditional Chinese) • Audio: click the speaker icon in the popup. Speech is synthesised by the desktop app — cloud voices by default (free for now, with a daily quota; this will become a paid feature to cover costs), or a local VOICEVOX engine if you set one up in the app • Toolbar popup: click the extension icon to keep searching, with the current selection filled in • Wordbook and history: saved to the desktop app on your own computer (history for browser lookups is off by default and can be turned on in the extension's settings) • Interface language: English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese, following the browser by default • Site blocklist: turn look-up off on sites you choose • Settings apply immediately and sync through your browser account [Privacy] The extension talks only to the Tomoshi desktop app on your own machine (127.0.0.1), never to a remote server. Selected text is sent only to the app on your computer; the extension itself collects and uploads nothing. [Known limitation] Pages rendered on a canvas, such as Google Docs, do not expose selectable text, so look-up does not work there yet. Copy the text and use the desktop app's global shortcut instead.
