Overview

Send the sites you use every day back in time: 2009 YouTube with a VHS mode, the 2010 Twitter bird, 2008 Google and 2004 Gmail.

Remember when the internet looked like this? Throwback sends the sites you use every day back to their classic years. Flip a switch and the page changes instantly, no reload and nothing to set up. 📺 YOUTUBE → 2009 • The old header, the grey tab bar and "Broadcast Yourself" • The title above a 640px player, in a fixed 960px layout • ★★★★★ star ratings and exact view counts ("440,627,980 views") • "From:" and "Added:" under the video, the yellow Subscribe button • "Related Videos" with small thumbnails • No Shorts. They didn't exist yet. 📼 VHS MODE • Turn any YouTube video into a home recording • Tracking lines, scanlines and washed-out colour • PLAY ▶ / PAUSE ❚❚ / ◀◀ REW on-screen display, with a glitch when you skip • SP tape counter and a camcorder date stamp showing the day the video was uploaded • Works in fullscreen 🐦 X → TWITTER 2010 • The bird and the "twitter" wordmark are back • Tweet, Retweet and ☆ Favorite instead of Post, Repost and Like • "about 2 hours ago" timestamps, Trending Topics, Who To Follow • The sky-blue background, clouds included • Hides things that didn't exist in 2010 (view counts, bookmarks and more) 🔎 GOOGLE → 2008 • The classic homepage with "I'm Feeling Lucky" • Your real search results, drawn the 2008 way: blue links, green URLs, bold search words • The Goooooooooogle page numbers • "Cached" opens the page as it looked in 2008, via the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine ✉️ GMAIL → 2004 (beta) • "Gmail BETA by Google", the old blue rows and a plain "Compose Mail" link • The famous storage counter, ticking upward PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No accounts, no tracking, no analytics • Nothing you see or type ever leaves your computer • The only thing it saves is your on/off switches Throwback is a fan project.
