The remarkable organism drifting through the vibrant blue water is a Cauliflower Jellyfish (Cephea cephea). In my three decades of studying marine life, I’ve found few species with such a distinctive appearance. This jellyfish is immediately recognizable by its bulbous, dome-shaped bell and the large, cauliflower-like cluster of oral arms hanging below. Unlike many of its relatives with long, delicate tentacles, the Cauliflower Jellyfish uses its dense oral arms to capture plankton and small fish. Its solid form and rhythmic pulsing allow it to maneuver effectively, a stark contrast to the passive drifting of many other jellyfish. This species showcases the incredible diversity and specialization of form that has evolved in the ocean's unique inhabitants.
