The powerful organism gliding through the deep blue is a Barrel Jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo). From my long tenure in marine biology, I find this species to be a perfect example of a robust, non-tentacled jellyfish. Its bell is a solid, dome-like structure, capable of powerful contractions for propulsion, giving it a more purposeful movement than many of its more delicate relatives. This jellyfish lacks the long, trailing tentacles common in other species. Instead, it possesses a massive, frilly cluster of oral arms that function as both a feeding mechanism and a primary means of locomotion. The sheer size and firm build of the Barrel Jellyfish allow it to dominate its plankton-rich environment, a silent but effective predator in the open water.
